SIS Athletics

What a great day our Nazareth Squad had at the SIS Athletics carnival at Lakeside Drive. We had a squad of 47 students across mostly Year 7 and 9, and a few students from Year 10 - 12.

Rebecca Munyard and Emily Page
Rebecca Munyard and Emily Page

A special mention to our two co-captains Rebecca Munyard and Emily Page for their dedication to the training program and at the carnival. Both girls were a huge help to staff and the junior year levels yesterday, providing endless encouragement and advice. A highlight from Rebecca was her sportsmanship in her Javelin event. Rebecca had already thrown her 3 attempts and noticed a fellow competitor struggling with technique. She stepped in and gave the competitor advice on how to throw. Her maturity, sportsmanship and generosity is such a credit to this school.

Other special mentions:

Senior Students who attended on the day: Rebecca Munyard, Zane Hayek, Oliver Adair, Shamiso Sibanda and Jacinta Ashby.

Jacinta Ashby
Jacinta Ashby

To our only Year 12 competitor Jacinta Ashby. Not only was she in the maximum of 5 events and a relay, she was also juggling her study for her English SAC today. It was great to see Jacinta give up her day to give back to the college, especially at a stressful time prior to a SAC. She was outstanding on the day,

Placing 2nd in Discus

Placing 2nd in High Jump

Placing 3rd in Javelin

Placing 1st in Triple Jump

Placing 1st in Shot Put

Placing 2nd in the 4 x100m relay

Jacinta had a massive day of competition and studying and she did it with a smile on her face. She is a credit to her Year Level and I wish we had more students like her.

From the Team Captains:

The SIS athletics carnival was an amazing day. We came 4th overall which was an outstanding effort. A big congratulations to everybody who competed, all of you did your best and it payed off. Also a big thank you to all the teachers who were involved in making the day happened.

Rebecca Munyard

The SIS Athletics Carnival was a great day for competing and seeing our junior students really stepping up and competing in all the events and putting up hands to do more. We had an amazing Year 12 student, Jacinta Ashby, who competed in 5 events and then the relay. She raked up as many points as she could for our squad and we couldn't have been prouder be a part of her last SIS Athletic Day even though she had an English Sac the next day. We came 4th overall on the day. Even after all our amazing efforts with a squad of only 49, we could not win any individual age group. But I am very proud of how the team went and proud to be able to represent the school on the day.

Melbourne Writers Festival Reflections

Attending the Melbourne Writer’s festival workshops was an eye-opener for me. The first topic that was discussed was social media. At first, my reaction was simply ‘Great! Just a few other people telling us how teenagers spend too much time on social media. Do people ever get bored of telling others off?’ Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the positives of social media were also discussed, which was something that, in my experience, had never happened before. Following this, I was eager (to say the least) to attend the next workshop.

The topic was ‘Boys will be boys’, which, once again, placed the discussion of the part that gender roles play in our lives in a new light. Lastly, we watched a debate which, though it had a rather basic and uninteresting topic, gave me the opportunity to think about ways to develop my own debating skills.

Overall, it was an incredibly enjoyable day, and I believe that everyone enjoyed it, even if they weren't that interested in books or reading!

Lastly, I would like to say a gigantic thank you to Ms Douglass for organising this excursion- we wouldn't have had such an amazing experience were it not for her.

On Monday the 27th of August a group of Year 9 and 10 students were given the opportunity to attend the Melbourne Writers Festival for 2018. The day included two panel discussions involving various authors including a poet and a rap artist, who discussed their way of coping with social media and stereotypes. The final session concluded with the Great Debate, whereby the teams were made up of students from various schools who are members of the Victorian debating team.

This festival was themed around ‘A matter of life or death’ and is said by the former director to be ‘a reflection on the things people reach for in order to survive and those moments where we look to words for comfort’.

I enjoyed both of the  interview sessions but most favorite session was the Great debate. It was inspiring to see young adults like myself taking part in such an event and it was amusing to see who really thought homework killed children (this was the debate topic).

Overall, the day was fun and entertaining and I am honored to have been a part of such an exciting day.

Year 12 Excursion to Monash Gallery of Art

On Thursday 23rd August, Unit 4 Studio Art students had the privilege of attending a presentation at the Monash Gallery of Art. This excursion gave students great insight and knowledge for the Studio Art Outcome 3 - Art industry contexts. Students were guided through the current exhibition and gained insight into the preparation, presentation and conservation of artworks. They were shown how specific artworks are presented and a curators’ consideration of how artworks are displayed within an art gallery. Students had the opportunity to see the storage area behind the gallery and shown how specific storage procedures are used to preserve the large collection of artworks at the Monash Gallery of Art.

Year 10 Social

It's safe to say that the Year 10 Social was a smashing success!. Through working with our Monash Mentors as part of the Monash Champions Program, we were able to make it a fun night filled with copious amounts of food, balloons, music  and plenty of dancing, proving to was a very enjoyable time for the students that were involved.

It was also successful in raising money and awareness for the Ricky Taylor Foundation for children and teens struggling with cancer.

A big thank you to all the teachers and staff involved in helping to make the night possible and to all the Year 10 students who came along.

Winter Sleepout

The ‘Winter Sleep out’ was a fun, memorable yet cold experience for us all, especially those sleeping in tents. But we were blessed with clear skies and no wind.

Not only was it a time to bond with different people from other year levels, it was a time to consider poverty and what life is like as ‘homeless’ people.

We began the night with some lovely soup and bread in the Joseph centre and then made our way down to the gym to begin the fun and games. Not long after, everyone made their way into the chapel for our liturgy. This was a great time for us to reflect and think about others, especially those who live out in the streets today. Of course it wouldn’t be a Winter sleep out without fire pits and roasting marshmallows, followed by a movie in the auditorium, which surprisingly began at 11:30pm! This year we watched The iconic Disney movie ‘Inside Out’, which for some, made us tear up a little :(. The movie wrapped up at 1.30am so most of us were pretty tired and ready to go to sleep.

Being my first winter sleep out, it is definitely one to remember. Without a doubt, many of us will be doing the winter sleep out until year 12, and we recommend it to everyone, no matter what age. Come along in the years ahead because we ensure that you will enjoy the experience as we all did in 2018.
