Youth Mental Health First Aid Training (YMFHA)

Recently, Mrs O'Neill, Mr Davy, Mrs Bearup and myself attended YMHFA training in Tamworth. The statistics are compelling; 1 in 5 people across Australia have a common  mental illness (anxiety, depression or substance use disorder). The onset of mental illness can start in adolescence and often young people do not seek professional help. At early intervention, the aim is to prevent problems from becoming more serious and reduce the likelihood of secondary effects such as loss of employment, school dropout, relationship break-up and drug and alcohol problems. This training course ensures Leaders of Student Care (LOSC), who are often the first responders to student needs, are well equipped to assist students and help them access medical help.

Fortunately, in Australia the stigma associated with mental illnesses is declining as the population becomes more educated about different illnesses. Like physical first aid training, mental health first aid will help save lives in Australia.

Next year, it is hoped that more Leaders of Student Care undergo this worthwhile training.

Happy holidays

Wishing all students and families a safe and restful holiday. We pray for our Year 12  students as they prepare for their HSC Examinations. It is advised that a combination of study, good nutrition, healthy sleep patterns and exercise is the right approach to a beneficial study program.

Finally, thank you to the hardworking Pastoral Care team, enjoy your break. Next term we have Acting Positions in LOSC roles as Mrs Gale (Year 10) and Mrs O'Neill (Year 11) take leave.
