We are looking forward to working with these talented young leaders throughout the remainder of 2019 into 2020. These students will be presented with their badge of office at the Academic Awards Night in December.

Walkathon

Congratulations again to everyone for their dedication and support of the 2019 Walkathon in aid of drought relief. In a difficult economic climate we managed to raise close to $10 000. We will now liaise with St Vincent de Paul to allocate the funds to needy families in the Tamworth and New England district. I also thank the student body for their hard work gathering donations and for their commitment to the day, with close to 90% attendance. Special commendation to the McCarthy Catholic College Environmental Council for their hard work in promoting of the annual event and the coordination of McCarthy’s Got Talent.

Year 12

A fitting farewell was offered at Assembly yesterday for our Year 12 students as they officially concluded classes prior to the HSC Examinations. While this particular assembly is always tinged with some sadness, the central theme of deep affection for their time here was readily apparent in all of the speeches and presentations. As is the practice since 2015, the Year 12 students awarded the Mother Teresa Award for Significant Contribution by a staff member to the growth and development of the year group over the last six years to a member of staff. The students decided this year to award it to Mr Damian Kenniff. On behalf of the whole faith community of MCarthy we wish them well in their future endeavours.

Staffing

It is my pleasure to announce the appointment of Ms Melanie Landers to a full time Mathematics teaching position from the beginning of next term. Ms Landers has recently graduated from the University of Newcastle and comes highly regarded from her most recent successful practicum at O’Connor Catholic College in Armidale. I am also pleased to announce the appointment of two experienced staff to Acting Leader of Student Care (LOSC) positions for Term 4. Ms Mel Davis will step in for Mrs Fiona O’Neill for 4½ weeks as Year 11 LOSC and Mrs Mel Lees will act in the Year 10 LOSC role for the full duration of Term 4. I thank them for their generosity and dedication in stepping into these busy roles.

Jack Cutcliffe Memorial Shield Game

A wonderful afternoon of Rugby was held at Pirates last Wednesday to commemorate the passing of Jack Cutcliffe in 2017. I publicly commend the positive spirit in which all the games were played and offer deep appreciation to Mr Kenniff, Mr Williams and Mr Mitchell for their organisational work behind the scenes. Similarly, it is of note that the community of the Pirates club offered such generous use of their facilities on the day. On behalf of the hundreds of spectators and family members who were in attendance, I deeply thank you. Jack’s spirit lives on in great community events like this.

End of Term

Classes conclude for Term 3 at 3:00pm on Friday 27 September. We will commence Term 4 on Monday 14 October at 8:45am. Please enjoy a wonderful break with your families and if you are travelling I hope that everyone returns safely to Tamworth.
