Jack Cutcliffe Memorial Tournament 2019

On Wednesday evening 18 September the second annual Jack Cutcliffe Cup series year was held at Pirates Rugby Club. A big crowd arrived early to create a great atmosphere. The first game was the Girls' Open’s match between McCarthy Catholic College and Calrossy. In a keenly contested game Calrsossy had the edge finishing up 20-10 winners. Crisp passing and ball movement from the Calrossy team saw them make some decisive breaks and convert these opportunities into tries. McCarthy girls stayed in the contest with tenacious tackling and desperate defence. Julia Hannaford was outstanding both in attack and defence, whilst Miah O’Sullivan and Alina Swan showed their class with brilliant attacking play. Tyla Endemi, in her first game of Rugby, showed great pace to run over 40 metres and score in the corner. All girls played well against quality opposition.

The boys ran out to a huge reception and were primed for a big game which was played at a high standard. Farrer ran in a couple of opportunistic tries when some of their fast men ran the length of the field after gathering loose balls. McCarthy attacked Farrer’s line on many occasions, but were denied by strong defence. The 21-0 scoreline was not a true indication of the game.

All played the game in great spirit and the mutual respect, sportsmanship and friendship from all teams was great to see. Congratulations to Thomas Croake who played an outstanding game and was named player of the match. There was great talent across the park; Liam Ball, Cassidy Hunter, Clay Frendin in particular played strong games and everyone was proud of their efforts.

The final game on the program was a very close tussle with Farrer first XV boys defeating Calrossy 18-15.

Thank you to Mr Damian Kenniff who coordinated the event, to Mr Bernie Williams for coaching the girls and to our Principal Mr Geoff McManus for doing a great job as ground announcer. Thank you to the Pirates Rugby club for the use of the venue and cooking a great bbq. And finally to NSW Rugby for supporting the event by providing referees and first aid, thank you.
