PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

PIERRE DE COUBERTIN AWARD

Max Schepisi (Year 10) was honoured in a special Pierre de Coubertin Award Ceremony at the MCG on Sunday 18 May, 2014 along with 127 other senior secondary school students.  Named after the founder of the modern Olympics, the Pierre de Coubertin Award recognizes students who demonstrate academic excellence and sporting prowess whilst exemplifying the Olympic Values.

The College nominates a Year 10 student who has demonstrated these values in their junior physical education and sport years.  Max was a very worthy recipient this year.

An initiative of the Australian Olympic Committee, the awards are celebrated nationally and hosted by the Victorian Olympic Council and funded by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

Max also participated in an Olympic Academy preceding the award ceremony.

The Academy is an opportunity for Pierre de Coubertin recipients and sporting leaders to interact with Olympians, learn about the Olympic Games, the a.s.p.i.r.e Olympic values as well as visit the National Sports Museum at the MCG.  Our School Captain Nick Parkinson (Pierre de Coubertin recipient 2012 and member of VOC ) spoke to the recipients about his fabulous experience on the Australian Olympic Council in Finland.

Congratulations Max on your outstanding achievement!

UBS FINANCE ACADEMY

Congratulations to Matthew Mahoney (Year 11) who has been chosen to attend the UBS Finance Academy from July 7-11, 2014.  The program has been created around the theme of finance.

The objective of the UBS Finance Academy is to provide leadership in banking education with a particular focus on senior secondary school students.  It introduces students to a wide range of career opportunities in banking.  This is a wonderful achievement for Matthew and we wish him well!

YEAR 12 THEATRE STUDIES

Last week I had the privilege of attending our Year 12 Theatre Studies play ‘Cosi’.  It will be remembered as one of the best plays I have ever seen performed at McKinnon!

Congratulations to Ms Doctor, the cast and crew, the staff who assisted and attended and the parents, grandparents and friends for their attendance and tremendous support.  May all our children continue to thrive and shine.

GOOGLE CASE STUDY

Chromebooks represents a big change in the way we use ICT at McKinnon.  Since their introduction we have seen the use of Google Apps and technology markedly improve student learning in the classroom.  I would like to thank the school community for their support and enthusiasm around this significant change.  Google have recently recognised McKinnon as a leader in this area with a case study around the success of our Chromebooks and Google Apps for Education.

This is another wonderful innovation developed and overseen by Mr Evans along with Mr Seufert and the ICT team at McKinnon and I thank and acknowledge them for this tremendous innovation.
