Year 8 Highlights
As usual there has been a lot happening in Year 8 with no shortage of highlights from both inside and outside the classroom.
We have welcomed four new students to the Glen Eira College community: Alana Pergl, Jackie Smith, Lizzie Strutt and Hayoung Kim. We wish them a smooth transition into Glen Eira and look forward to them being successful members of the school community.
Congratulations to the Year 8 students who helped make the 2018 production of Little Shop of Horrors one of the best the college has seen. There were a number of Year 8s who had roles in the cast and crew. See the performing arts section for a more detailed report on the production.
Towards the end of term 2 8A, 8B, 8C & 8D were involved in a projected-based learning program run by the Australian Council for Education Research. The program was part of a wider research project aimed at developing capabilities like collaboration, critical thinking, creative thinking, and research skills. The focus of the project was the humanities subjects but it also incorporated cross-curricular activities. The feedback we recieved from the students involved was that is was a stimulating and exciting project to be a part of and it was great to see students being challenged in different ways.
Finally, the Year 8 boys soccer team defeated Cranbourne 4-1 to qualify for the Southern Metropolitan Finals to be held in August. We wish the following students all the best in the next stage of competition:
Aran Pinsky
Michael Mints
Michael Linardakis
George Pappas
Marti Casanovas
Lucas Vaidie
Haddi El Shorbagy
Daniel Schauder
Aiden Tsui

Year 9 Highlights
We have so many talented students within our Year 9 cohort this year. Recently we had our school production of Little Shop of Horrors, which included several Year 9 students in main roles. Well done to those students involved and I hope that we see you next year for another fantastic, talent filled show.
These students included:
Ben Matthews
Jasmine Shaw
Liam Ben-Moyal
Lottie Hudson
Aimee Harris
Alannah De Jesus
Georgia Wood-Freeman
Chhavi Goel
Marcus Georgiou
Preyanshi Shah
Gabriella Voges
Layla Carmeli-Wolski
At the start of term we had our Excellence and Endeavour awards which were presented at our weekly assembly. Parents were invited along to join in on the celebrations and I was so proud of all of the students who were nominated and received an award on the day. Progress reports are a good indication of how are students are travelling overall in all subjects. Students who have worked hard and show dedication to improvement have been awarded for their efforts. There will be more opportunities for students to gain awards this year at the end of year celebration awards in December.
We have Year 9 camp coming up soon, which will take place in term 4, week 3. This camp is called Rubicon Outdoor Education Camp, and will be available to only 70 students. It is really important that you register your interest as this is a first in best dressed camp. You must fill in a Google form which has been sent to you all. This camp is 5 days and will be a fantastic opportunity for all who would like to be involved. Please stay tuned for more information.

From the Junior School Captains
On the first Friday of term 3 the Year 9s had their awards ceremony. During this morning, academic excellence awards and academic endeavour awards were received. The academic excellence awards are given out to students who have excelled across all areas of their study at school. The academic endeavour award is awarded to students who have put in their best effort across all subjects during the semester.
Speeches were made by Junior School Captains and Sheereen Kindler, the school Principal. There was also an award given out for community service. David Southwick was at the assembly to give this award out. This award was given to Ruth Gordon, the president of our college council for her amazing work she does for our school and our community. Overall the awards ceremony is always a great morning where we get to reflect on our successes and achievements.

After three fantastic shows, the GEC 2018 production of Little Shop of Horrors has drawn to a close. Throughout this journey over 6 months, the cast, crew and GEC community put together a show that was not only enjoyable to perform, but to watch as well. A huge thanks to Mrs Mortimer for making this amazing production come to life, and to all the teachers who gave up their time to contribute to and supervise the show, and we all look forward to next year’s production.

The production Little Shop of Horrors would not have been possible without the crew. Thank you for making everything possible, because without you it would be a pretty dull show. Congratulations on being part of something so special and helping out extraordinarily!
