School Council Report

Council met  in July and will meet again in August. Council has been working on a number of policies including the Canteen Policy, Attendance Policy and Homestay Policy. Council has started discussing the implications of the available results of the Students Attitudes to School Survey. GEC is also investigating and consulting on mobile phone usage at school with students, staff and parents. This feedback will inform the Council’s policy review of this issue.

GEC Council is writing to CDC regarding recent timetable changes to the bus route 623 (St Kilda - Glen Waverley) via Booran Road.  If your children are negatively affected by these changes, you may want to email cdcoakleigh@cdcbus.com.au to raise your concerns.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our two new student elected representatives to Council – Morgan Edwards and Ashleigh Harris. Morgan and Ashleigh are already valued members of Council after only a couple of meetings. Student voice on Council is critical as they have insight into how school polices work on the ground and are a valuable addition to parent, staff and community representation on Council.

The electronic speed signs on Booran Road are now operational. I am thrilled every time I see the signs and, from what I have noticed, cars seem to be traveling slower all through the school day. Steve Dimopoulos, Member for Oakleigh, attended GEC in June to celebrate the installation of the signs with students and staff from VicRoads.

Congratulations to the team who put on such an entertaining and successful production Little Shop of Horrors. Thanks to the students, staff and parents who contributed to produce a show of such high standards. A lovely supper was provided by the GECPA.  What a great night out!

Thanks to Cathy McNaughton for organising a fantastic tree planting day last Friday at GEC. Students, staff and volunteers worked together on a lovely sunny day to plant trees and shrubs, some of which were donated by Glen Eira Council and by the Level Crossing Authority. Also thanks to Ross McNaughton for his hard work digging holes and assisting on the day. Some students said they had never planted anything before and we all enjoyed working together to beautify the school environment. Now the students can enjoy watching their plants grow and can use these skills at home too!

The GECPA Trivia Night is coming up on 1st September.  This is always a fun night out and a great way for staff, parents, friends, alumni and Year 12s to support GEC.  Mr Lou will be Trivia Master and there will lots of great prizes.  The theme is Fright Night. So book a table, plan your costume and come along. See the GECPA page for more information and booking details.
