From the Assistant Principals

Learning Begins at 8.55am

Glen Eira College is committed to supporting all students to achieve the highest attendance rates.  When students are late to school without a note or a phone call from their parent or guardian, they are required to attend a lunchtime detention on the same day.

If your child is late for any reason, it is best to contact the school office as soon possible.  This can be done by phone (9571 7838) or email (glen.eira.co@edumail.vic.gov.au).

Sport

A new term brings new sporting opportunities for interschool sport.  The term 3 sports are Futsal, Basketball, Table Tennis and Hockey.  Students have been signing up over the first few weeks of the term and their competitions are being held on the following dates:

It has been fantastic to see three boys' soccer teams progress through to the Regional Final.  Our Year 7, Year 8 and Intermediate (Years 9 and 10) teams all won their Beachside Division Final and their respective playoffs for the Regional Final against schools from Casey South.   Our staff have been running extra training sessions and the commitment of the boys has been commendable.  We wish them well in their upcoming finals.

Hosting a student from Ogaki, Japan

Thursday 16 August to Tuesday 21 August 2018

Every two years Glen Eira City Council accepts exchange students from the Ogaki International Exchange Association (OIEA) as part of a sister city relationship.

Glen Eira College is delighted to be a part of this program in 2018 by providing our families the opportunity to host 9 students aged 12 – 15 years and three delegation leaders in August 2018. This is an excellent opportunity for students and families to learn more about Japan, its history, people and culture and to expand their Japanese language skills.

The opportunity to host a student is a wonderful experience, a benefit to the entire family. Not only will you be sharing Australian culture but you will be learning about another world, have fun and most of all make friendships which will last a life time.

We still require a couple more host families.  If you would be willing to host a student or a leader please contact the General Office as soon as possible.

Award Recipients

It was our pleasure to recognise the outstanding effort, attitude and application of our students at the recent Mid Year Awards Assemblies.  Awards were presented in the fields of Academic Excellence and Academic Endeavour.  Award winners were nominated by their teachers and presented with their certificates by our Principal, Sheereen Kindler.  On behalf of the students, staff and parents I would like to thank the brave students who were willing to sing the national anthem at each assembly.

Congratulations to all of the students listed below.

New Attendance Requirements

If your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify the school as soon as possible on the day of absence, by phoning the absence line on 9571 4178.

Notifying the school of your child’s absence either prior to, or on the day that they will be away, helps ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and will fulfil your legal responsibility.

If you are planning to go on holiday you need to contact the Year Level Coordinator as soon as possible to make a meeting time in order to plan for the absence, preventing your child from falling behind in their learning.

All Victorian government schools are required to contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence. If your child is absent on a particular day and you have not contacted the school to explain why, the absence will be marked as unexplained.

This system also promotes daily school attendance. Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education, they learn new things every day – missing school puts them behind.

The Glen Eira College Attendance Policy which outlines the school’s processes and procedures for monitoring, recording and following-up of student absences is available on the school website.

Writing and Reading

We continue to have a focus on writing and reading this year at the college. The English KLA and Literacy Leader, Justine Douglas, has been leading a focus on improving the writing and reading of students across the school. A particular focus has been at Year 7 and 8. These students have been working on the Seven Traits of Writing program and how to become more sophisticated readers. The experience of other schools and the educational research into these programs provide a strong foundation for our approach. Our teachers regularly moderate student writing together to improve the quality of written work. Staff have been undergoing professional development over the year in vocabulary development, reading strategies and the traits of writing.

Cristina, our literacy teacher, has been working with our teachers on ensuring that our students’ reading skills are enhanced. We are using a range of reading strategies such as reading conferences that enhances the ability of students to be discerning and intuitive readers. This is particularly important when reading exam questions.
