ECP students considering studying in Scotland toured three universities in Edinburgh and the University of St Andrews, where Prince William and Kate Middleton met. They watched presentations there and had the chance to ask questions of admissions staff as well as students. During their stay they also visited several historical landmarks in Edinburgh, enjoyed a real Scottish breakfast and went to see the musical Chess.

The ECP Modern Languages department travelled to European cities and students practised their language skills with native speakers in real situations - the best way to learn a language - as well as visiting interesting historical sites and experiencing the local culture.

Studenti ECP, kteří zvažují studium na univerzitách ve Skotsku si prohlédli tři univerzity v Edinburghu a Univerzitu v St. Andrews, kde Princ William potkal Kate Middleton. Sledovali prezentace škol a měli možnost klást otázky pracovníkům přijímacího řízení i studentům. Během svého pobytu studenti také navštívili několik historických památek v Edinburghu, ochutnali pravou skotskou snídani a shlédli muzikál Chess.

Oddělení výuky moderních jazyků navštívilo různá evropská města a studenti si vyzkoušeli své jazykové znalosti s rodilými mluvčími v reálných situacích. To je nejlepší způsob, jak se naučit cizí jazyk. Zároveň navštívili zajímavé historické památky a zažili místní kulturu.

Edinburgh Universities and Cultural Trip 2017

“Edinburgh is a city of shifting light, of changing skies, of sudden vistas. A city so beautiful it breaks the heart again and again”, Alexander McColl Smith.

The prolific author of the No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency is quite correct in his description of his adopted hometown. The travel bug had infected again as eleven aspiring students of The English College in Prague ventured to the sunny climes of bonnie Scotland, hungry for a taste of university life in the capital. The schedule, crammed with activities, assumed we had one hundred hours in the day - if only - put our time efficiency to the test.  After recovering from our early start and settling into our impressive accommodation, equipped with breathtaking panoramic views of Edinburgh and the seaside, we toured two of the city’s universities. Between the different university visits, the aim was to experience different faculties of study, giving the students the opportunity to ask questions on their desired areas of study.

The visit to Edinburgh Napier University predominantly focused on science: life sciences, health and social care, nursing, applied sciences, as well as sports and exercise science.  The ‘Talk & Tour’ was lead by Dr Dave Smith, the Head of Biological Sciences at the university. The institution possessed state-of-the-art facilities allowing its students to have the skills increasing their employability. A staggering 95.1% of graduates from Edinburgh Napier are in work or further study within six months of leaving the university (Higher Education Statistics Agency, 2015).

The introduction to The University of Edinburgh (UoE) took place at the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, providing information on university life from courses, to finances, to accommodation and extra-curricular activities. With UoE being the university of most interest to our students, on this visit, they were proactive in seeking out more information. Our tour around the main city centre campus was led by a third-year UoE student of Medical Science, from Poland, who enthusiastically provided on-campus information, as well as top tips for university applications and personal statements. Post-trip feedback from the students conveyed that this university experience was the favourite and the most beneficial for them.

Although the Friday was one of the rainiest days we experienced, the weather did not dampen our spirits and the experience of the idyllic seaside town of St Andrews. Located some eighty kilometers north of Edinburgh, the town is home to Britain’s third oldest university - The University of St Andrews. Although not quite as old as Prague’s Charles University, the institution was founded around 1410 and educates 8790 students in undergraduate, postgraduate and research posts. Currently, 45% of students at the university are from outside of the UK, having been accepted into a variety of posts. An informative talk was provided by an alumnus of the institution, who decided to remain working for the university and allowed for a more personal perspective on the university.  We were kindly informed that, during the application process, the admissions office are willing to ‘proof-read’ prospective student personal statements and to provide general feedback on these - a service that could be invaluable to our students in the future. The tour of the widespread campus was lead by a third-year History student and included items such as extra-curricular activities and the well-resourced Student Union.

Although the majority of the trip focused on universities and the futures of our students, we ensured time for fun, educational activities too. In terms of Scottish cultural, the students experienced many locations including, Edinburgh Castle, The Real Mary King’s Close and a frighteningly good ghost tour of the Royal Mile and Old Town. As well as places of historical interest, we catered for our arty sides, including a visit to The National Galleries of Scotland and also to the Festival Theatre to watch ‘Chess: The Musical’, performed by the National Conservatoire of Scotland. The students also had the opportunity to try haggis, traditional Scottish cuisine, which was met with mixed reviews.

Overall, our trip to Scotland was wholly successful and proved to be a worthwhile venture, which will hopefully be repeated in the future, to demonstrate university life in Scotland as a viable choice for our students.  One of the main messages from the trip was that the personal statement in university application is just as important - if not, more - than the grades themselves.  That’s not to say that the students do not need to meet the minimum requirements, but does reiterate the importance of the students putting themselves in the best light to their chosen faculties. Should the students have further questions regarding studying in Scotland and progressing to the next stage in their education, they should be proactive in contacting the universities and carrying out their own research.

Návštěva univerzit a kulturních památek v Edinburghu 2017

„Edinburgh je město měnícího se světla, měnící se oblohy, náhlých průhledů. Město tak krásné, až to láme srdce, znovu a znovu“, Alexander McColl Smith.

Plodný autor knihy No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (Vůně Kalahari) takto zcela správně popisuje své adoptivní rodné město. Jedenáct ctižádostivých studentů ECP cestovalo během slunných dní po Skotsku, natěšených na ochutnávku univerzitního života v hlavním městě. Pro plán nabitý aktivitami, bychom potřebovali, aby měl každý den sto hodin, takže jsme si prošli testem časové efektivity. Po zotavení z prvního dne s velmi brzkým startem a po ubytování se v příjemném prostředí s nádherným panoramatickým výhledem na Edinburgh a moře, jsme navštívili dvě univerzity sídlící v tomto městě. Cílem univerzitních návštěv bylo poznat různé fakulty a dát studentům příležitost klást otázky týkající se jejich vybraných oblastí studia.

Návštěva Edinburgh Napier University byla převážně zaměřena na vědu: humanitní vědy, zdravotní a sociální péči, ošetřovatelství, aplikované vědy, a také sport. Prohlídku vedl Dr. Dave Smith, vedoucí biologických věd. Instituce disponuje supermoderním vybavením, které umožňuje studentům procvičovat dovednosti, a tím zvyšovat svoji zaměstnatelnost. Ohromujících 95,1% absolventů Edinburgh Napier nalezne uplatnění v práci nebo dalším studiu do šesti měsíců po ukončení univerzity (Higher Education Statistics Agency, 2015).

Představení University of Edinburgh (UoE) se konalo na Fakultě literatury, jazyků a kultury, včetně poskytnutí informací o životě na univerzitě, od jednotlivých oborů přes finance, ubytování až po mimoškolní aktivity. Tato univerzita naše studenty zajímala nejvíce, a proto se aktivně dotazovali. Naši prohlídku hlavního areálu v centru města vedl student třetího ročníku oboru lékařská věda z Polska, který nám s radostí poskytl informace o školním areálu, stejně jako tipy na sepsání přihlášky a motivačního dopisu. Zpětná vazba od studentů ukázala, že tato univerzita a zážitky z její návštěvy byly pro ně nejvíce přínosné.

Přestože byl pátek jedním z nejdeštivějších dnů našeho pobytu, počasí nám náladu a zážitky z idylického přímořského městečka St Andrews nezkazilo. Městečko se nachází asi osmdesát kilometrů severně od Edinburghu a je sídlem třetí nejstarší britské univerzity - The University of St Andrews. I když není tak stará jako Univerzita Karlova v Praze, tato instituce byla založena kolem roku 1410 a vzdělává 8,790 studentů v bakalářském, magisterském a výzkumném programu. V současné době je 45% studentů univerzity zahraničních a studují nejrůznější obory. Informace nám poskytla absolventka instituce, která se rozhodla i nadále působit na univerzitě a umožnila nám tak získat osobní pohled. Byli jsme informováni, že v průběhu procesu podání žádosti o studium nabízí přijímací kancelář možnost konzultace motivačního dopisu a dává k němu obecnou zpětnou vazbu - jedná se o službu, která by mohla být pro naše studenty v budoucnosti nedocenitelná. Prohlídku rozsáhlého areálu vedla studentka třetího ročníku oboru historie, která hovořila i o mimoškolních aktivitách a dobře organizované Studentské unii.

Ačkoli byla velká část výletu zaměřena na univerzity a budoucnost našich studentů, udělali jsme si čas také na zábavu a vzdělávací aktivity. Co se týče skotské kultury, studenti navštívili mnoho míst, včetně Edinburgského hradu, podzemní uličky The Real Mary King’s Close, a zažili strašidelnou prohlídku Starého města a Royal Mile. Kromě historických zajímavostí jsme také měli kulturní program, včetně návštěvy Skotské národní galerie a představení Národní Skotské konzervatoře pod názvem “Ch
