Work Experience

During the recent school holidays, several students took the opportunity to do voluntary work experience with a range of employers including IT, childcare and various local tradespersons. Good feedback has been received from the employers.

One Year 11 student, Bianca, completed a week of work experience at The Macadamia Castle in Northern NSW.  This is what Bianca wrote about her experience:

From the 7 - 11 of October 2019 I took part in animal husbandry/public interaction work experience at the Macadamia Castle in Knockrow, NSW. Through this experience I developed numerous skills and knowledge about native animals and how to manage them, their threats out in the wild and their nutritional diets. These include the ringtail possum, black headed python, crocodile, black cockatoo and koala. During the course of the week I was able to see a death adder snatch and devour a rat, hold and observe new born baby mice, sun bake with a bearded dragon, bottle feed week old baby kids, calves and lambs and watch the many shows and talks the Castle offered, such as the reptile, nocturnal and bird shows.

Overall, my work experience at the Macadamia Castle was a blast! It gave me an idea of the work associated with being a zoo keeper and how to manage and bond with the animals. I was offered an insight into the many career opportunities that involve animals and allowed me to gain an understanding of the educational pathway that needs to be completed in order to become qualified for these jobs.

Webinar for Parents: Are our young Australians ready for a world yet to be imagined?

The future workplace will bring new experiences and expectations. Children starting preschool today will engage in a very different world to the one in which we currently live.

They will work in jobs that are yet to be created, use technology that has not yet been invented and face social, economic and environmental challenges that are yet to be anticipated.

To be successful in the future world of work, young people will need skills and capabilities to navigate this new world and to make well-informed career decisions throughout life.

Future Ready is Australia’s National Career Education Strategy that supports schools in providing high-quality career education experiences for all students. Career education builds resilient individuals who can adapt to the changing nature of work, managing multiple careers throughout their lifetime and adapt to circumstances and needs.

As parents and carers, you play a vital role in supporting your children on their journey. It is important for parents and carers to be aware of the value of career education and how the world of work is evolving and changing. Supporting you to assist your children with making decisions about further education and training options that equip them to be successful is important. That is why on Thursday 14 November 2019 at 7:30pm AEDST there is a webinar just for parents and carers.
