YEAR 7 DEBATING

As part of their current Connected Learning Program, Year 7 students have been introduced to Debating skills. Year 7W held their first debates this week with topics chosen by the students. They included:

  • Dance is not a sport
  • Nuclear weapons should be banned
  • Slavery should be legal for prisoners and criminals
  • People should not eat meat

Connected learning has enabled the students to work on the skills of debating including introducing themselves and their teams, introducing their topic, defining their topic, researching, arguing their point, using persuasive language, rebutting their oppositions points, summarising and concluding their debate.

A new and challenging experience, the students learned a lot about body language, communication, matter (content of the speech), method (the way the speech is structured) and manner (speaker’s style including body language).

This exposure to debating leads into interhouse debating in the coming terms. Year 7 Interhouse Debating is held during AMP time on Wednesdays in Term 3.
