IN CELEBRATION OF DJERAN

Year 5 students wrote the rhyming couplets in pairs, then crafted it into one poem. They illustrated each of the lines in the poem and three students put the movie together. Please view the video below. Ms Brette Lockyer (ICT Literacy Teacher) helped students to create their own music.

Please read the article below on the celebration of Djeran from Year 5C.

This class project began when we were doing home learning. It is a part of our year-long project investigating the country we live and play on – the land and waters of the Whadjuk Noongar people. We are observing our place during the six Indigenous seasons of Western Australia. Usually we would survey our creek and school grounds, however Miss Chatto asked us to survey and take notice of what was happening in our own back yards during the season of Djeran. We needed to do some research and we practised note-taking before finding out more about how the Noongar people live(d) during this season. When we came back to school, we learnt about rhyming couplets and how to use syllables to keep the rhythm in a poem. We worked in pairs, each one writing a couplet, and then we put them together to create one class poem. Each of us then created our own hand-drawn picture, using the colour scheme we had decided on together. Finally, some students put the video together using iMovie. We all recorded one line of the poem. Then Gianni Mirco and Annabella Tan (Year 5) made the background music with a little help from Ms Brette Lockyer, using some very unique instruments – including ping pong balls! We are really proud of our final poem, and many of us think we will use this presentation tool in the future to show our learning. We are now working on our individual Djeran poems.

YEAR 1E VOLCANO INVESTIGATION

Year 1E’s interest in volcanoes grew from a wonderful parent talk in Term 1, followed by cross Year 1 learning experiences during AS@Home that built upon Year 1B’s existing inquiry into this topic. It was wonderful to see how excitement around this topic spread from one class to the whole year level.

Their interest and understanding were built upon in Term 2 through exploring books and digital texts to uncover a deeper understanding of the parts of a volcano, where the lava comes from and how volcanoes can help us, among other topics.

These investigations were complemented by the step-by-step construction of a replica volcano using papier mache over tree branches and twine. At each stage the students were asked for their ideas for the next step of the design, resulting in exploration of unexpected areas such as ocean dwelling living creatures.

It was a pleasure to observe the class’s unfolding of a rich, multi-layered understanding of both the features of volcanoes and the positive and less positive impacts that they might have on those living near them.
