Curriculum

One more week until we are officially back in the classroom! As much as we’ve enjoyed our casual clothes and slippers we are so excited to be teaching in person again and to see all the students! As we begin to transition back into the classroom, the 5/6 teachers are thinking of ways to include activities and routines used throughout Remote Learning to continue using in the classroom. Such as more self-directed tasks allowing students to work at their own pace or completing tasks in the order of their choosing. We are so proud of the responsibility and love of learning displayed by the cohort.

Let’s get ready to rumble!!! Last week students continued to prepare and work on their debates

through Zoom ‘breakout rooms’ and typing on a shared Google Document. Students sought feedback from their team members and teachers in the process. The three topics were, 'Should school be four days', 'Remote learning vs Learning at school' and 'Should zoos be banned'? We were very impressed with the research under taken by students as they included a range of facts. Some examples used were- the importance of sleep or exercise or of course eating whenever you want to and saving endangered species. On Thursday classes began their debates with the affirmative team starting. Students were assessed on a rubric (see below) and completed a self-assessment after their speech. They were recorded which you can also view on your child’s Seesaw.

Students were respectful to their peers as they listened to everyone’s arguments and worked cooperatively as a team to think and send relevant rebuttals through the chat on Zoom or take notes for themselves. The debates were a huge success and congratulations to all the winning teams! The teachers were so proud of the teamwork, leadership and persistence the students showed that we will continue working on new debates and topics when we are back in the classroom.

Throughout the week, students completed a range of Mathematics Investigations that integrated a range of topics, including integers, fractions, decimals, length, data, 2D and 3D shapes. Within each activity, students were given the opportunity to work their way through increasingly challenging tasks which included a final extension activity. These investigations included: measuring the height of family members, representing the data as a graph and using fractions to describe results; researching M.C. Escher and his artwork and creating tessellating patterns as well as creating 3D tessellating patterns; recording the distance travelled by paper planes and exploring ways in which speed can be measured; and finally, identifying angles within the house and using angles relationships to identify and measure other angles. Each investigation began with a warm up activity that consisted of a riddle. It was wonderful to see the insightful responses made by students who challenged themselves to record their mathematical thinking.
