SJB Online Assembly Week 7

Home Reading & Recording

Years K-6 are required to read for homework from Monday – Thursday. On Monday, teachers allocated books to students. Additional books can be accessed using the digital platform of Bug Club if they are required.

Please ensure your child’s reading log is being filled out to keep a record of their home reading. (Younger students may need your help with this!) All Reading Logs require a parent signature, before the log and home readers are returned to class on Friday

Home Reading Considerations

* During home reading time, try not to let television intrude on reading time.

*  Make a special time for reading with your child, away from interruption.

*  Let your child hold the book and turn the pages.

*  Ty not to interrupt the reading. Make comments at the end of the page. The less you interrupt the reading, the more you are supporting your child’s reading independence, resilience and confidence.

*  Avoid judging your child’s reading with words such as: ‘good’, ‘excellent’ or ‘getting better’. Instead comment on the strategies your child uses when reading such as:

  • ‘I like how you read on when you came to that difficult word.’
  • ‘I like how you changed your voice to be the voice of the character in the story’.
  • ‘I noticed that you reread the bit that did not make sense.’

*  Identifying unfamiliar words and solve them using context clues.

*  Encourage your child to think about the meaning of the story through discussions about the book. Ask questions and together make predictions about what might happen next.

*  Listen to your child every day, even for a short time.

*  Use the ideas from ‘Supporting Comprehension At Home’ inside the

Years 3-6 Reading Log.

*  Praise, praise, praise! Children learn through success.

*  Get excited about new vocabulary and try to use these words in sentences as a family.

*  Be confident that your child will learn to read.

How well can you advertise the JOY of reading?

Our goal is to motivate children to want to read so they will practice reading to develop their reading independence and fluency.  SJB encourages Home Reading to support and develop reading skills and strategies to help children become successful, confident readers who read for enjoyment, knowledge or to an audience as required.

Parents can support at home by:

  • Reading great stories and poems to children
  • Talking about books with your children. (Tell them your favourite author, children’s book, favourite poem, funny comic you read etc)
  • Encouraging Library borrowing and ensuring your child has a borrowing bag on their Library day at school
  • Advertising the joy of reading by making reading a valued, enjoyable, shared activity each afternoon or evening

Semester 1 Reports

How will teachers report on my child's progress this Semester?

Reports will look very different this Semester due to remote learning and the need for teachers to modify the usual class programs.

The Catholic Education Office has developed a Semester 1 Student Interim Report.

The Report is not a Progress Report related to Learning Outcomes, it is a report on the Student's engagement with their learning during this very different time. Teachers will report on student effort and engagement in Religious Education, English and Mathematics with no comments written on the Report.

Parent/Teacher Conferences will still be conducted this term.  They will be a very good opportunity to meet with your child/ren's teacher/s to celebrate Semester 1 and discuss learning goals for Semester 2.

Attendance will not be shown on the Semester 1 Interim Report.

When do reports go home?

Semester 1 Student Interim Reports for Years 1 to Year 6 will be available in Compass after 3:00pm on Friday 19 June 2020.  (Week 8).

Kindergarten

Kindergarten students do not receive a Semester 1 written report. However, Kindergarten teachers will be holding parent/teacher conferences where parents can engage in conversation with the class teacher. These will be held in Weeks 9 and 10.

School Shoes

Wearing of the correct school uniform is a condition of enrolment and is an outward sign of pride in and respect for the school.

Likewise, the wearing of correct footwear is also an important part of the school uniform.

Students are required to wear black leather polishable school shoes.

Sports shoes should be supportive, predominantly white sport shoes. Canvas ‘Raben’ type shoes are not appropriate for school wear. The laces should be white.

Sports socks must be white socks i.e. covering the ankle. ‘Sockettes’ are not appropriate for school wear.

Vivobarefoot School Shoes, (not boot style), are  an acceptable form of footwear, for those wanting to encourage natural growth, development and movement through minimalist footwear.
