Sport Development Leader

Sport is a great vehicle to promote healthy lifestyles; it not only allows us to keep fit and hang with friends, but it provides lots of life lessons that are important in developing the right mindset to tackle the big wide world.

Sport unknowingly teaches us time management, commitment, and how to work as part of a team, balancing the elation of success and accepting defeat.  By experiencing the emotions in sport it helps build resilience and guides us on how to interact with others through adult life.

While leaders are often easy to pick out a lesson I have learned is that there are some team leaders who are not team captains and there are some team captains who are not team leaders.  Skills and status do not alone qualify you to become a leader.

As we know, success is most often achieved when a team has leadership and common goals, so developing these leaders is vital to the success of a sporting program.  The challenge is how to balance leadership with followership - are you leading to be more popular or are you leading to drive success for your team?  A leader is not always the best player in a team, but they do have to drive to inspire and always give their best.

We are on the hunt for our next batch of sporting leaders to inspire the College.  We have put the call out to our senior students of 2021 to apply.  This is an opportunity to develop your skills by leading not just your own team but a whole sport.  You could stage come-and-try days and/or skill development sessions, and speak to the players to motivate them to enjoyment and success.

The first part of leadership is taking the leap ... are you ready to jump?

All information for this is currently in Student Notices.  We hope to hear from you soon.
