Physical Education

The F/1s have been working on their soccer skills over the last two weeks. Their passes are getting more powerful and they know to use the inside of their foot to get the ball where they want it. They have been using little kicks to control the ball while dribbling. With the shots for goal I’ve seen we might just have the next Sam Kerr or Tim Cahill at Newlands!

Throwing and catching is one of the most important skills to develop throughout primary school. Throwing is vital to a wide range of sports including basketball, netball, baseball and handball. Our year 2/3 students are working on their chest passes and underarm throws. They have even completed some ball handling challenges like figure eights through the legs.

As we continue looking at games from other cultures the 4/5/6s explored poi, from New Zealand. Poi is the Maori word for ball on a string and our students made their own using socks. Poi are held in each hand and are swung around the body in different patterns. Check out Cooper’s poi skills in the video! Socks are great to start with because they don’t hurt when they hit you. The Maori people of New Zealand used poi to build up the muscles in their arms and hands in order to get ready for battle or for weaving. Poi was then used by the women in traditional dances.
