Learning and Teaching

What a blessing it is to be part of a community that works to create and provide opportunities for students that inspire and engage them in solution focused discussions. Kilbreda girls are regularly involved in a multitude of learning experiences that enable them to demonstrate compassion and work collaboratively with others. Below are just few examples of the programs that have operated in recent weeks.

  • VCAL Enrichment Day
  • BRIDGES – Indigenous Experience
  • Year 12 Retreat
  • International Women’s Day Breakfast

Extension and Enrichment Workshops

Year 8 – Science Workshop

A group of students eagerly applied to participate in a series of seven workshops which began this week. The workshops have been designed for students who enjoy Science classes, demonstrate natural curiosity, love to problem solve and relish the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded peers to extend their knowledge and skills in this area. Students will work to develop an entry for the 2022 Science Talent Search.

The Science Talent Search aims to stimulate an ongoing interest in the study of Sciences by:

• Encouraging independent self-motivated project work amongst students of Science

• Giving students the opportunity to communicate their achievements to a wider audience

• According recognition of effort and achievement in a scientific enterprise

The workshops are being facilitated by Mr Allen Dickson, an experienced teacher who has previously worked with G.A.T.E.Ways (Gifted and Talented Education), Pearson and is currently the Lego Education Brand Ambassador.

Year 9 – English Workshop

Our Year 9 English Extension Workshops also began this week, with future authors and literary critics excited about the opportunity to participate in a series of seven workshops designed for students who have a love of reading and writing.

The workshops will be facilitated by Ms Debra Greaves, an experienced English teacher who has been employed at Kilbreda specifically to work in our tutoring program and to provide opportunities for extension in English for Kilbreda girls. Workshop topics will be co-designed by students to provide opportunity for student voice and student agency.

Celebration of  Academic Achievement Evening

Congratulations to all of our students who received awards on the Celebration of Academic Achievement Evening. It was a wonderful celebration of learning and persistent effort through the challenges of 2021. If you were unable to attend, or view the live stream, you can watch it HERE.

VCE and VCAL Parent Information Evening

It was wonderful to have parents join us last week to hear about the ways in which they can work in partnership with the College to support their daughters through their final years of schooling.

New staff members, Ms Clare Kelly (Senior Pathways Leader) and Ms Jane Delahunty (Student Wellbeing Leader: Years 10 to 12) presented information to support parent understanding of the senior pathways that are offered at the College and the journey that students undertake in these final years.

If you were unable to make it last week you are able to watch the recording HERE

NAPLAN

NAPLAN will be moving online this year. The Year 7 and Year 9 students will have an opportunity to practice the online version of the NAPLAN test on Tuesday 15 March and Thursday 24 March in preparation for the official NAPLAN tests in mid-May. These practice tests provide an opportunity to test the technology capacity of both the school and the state and also provide opportunity for students to familiarise themselves with the test features without any pressure of assessment. Students are asked to bring a pair of headphones/earbuds that they can utilise during the test.

Tutoring – After hours in the College Library

We have engaged the services of numerous tutors to provide support for students in their studies. These tutors will be available in the Library between 3.30pm and 5.30pm Monday to Friday, with the Library closing at 6.00pm on these days. A number of these tutors are high performing past pupils of distinction who are looking forward to working with current Kilbreda students.

Parent/Teacher Interviews

We value the opportunity to partner with families in the education of their daughters. One such opportunity to connect is through the participation in parent/teacher interviews. The girls are encouraged to attend and engage in conversation regarding their learning. These parent/teacher interviews will be held online via Microsoft Teams, with further details regarding the interviews being sent the week prior.

Save the dates:

  • Tuesday 29 March 2.45pm to 8.00pm
  • Wednesday 6 April 2.45pm to 8.00pm

Elevate Education

We are proud to work with Elevate Education to provide multiple opportunities for students and parents to engage with workshops regarding study skills and techniques. Year 12 students have recently had the opportunity to participate in a workshop onsite entitled, “Ace Your Exams.” This workshop provided students with the skills and knowledge on how to prepare throughout the year in readiness for examinations in order to perform at their best.
