Cocurricular Performing Arts

After a very challenging two years, it has been marvellous to see everybody back on board in the Performing Arts department, face-to-face at last!!

It has been a very busy term so far, providing musical performances for two masses, a Whole School Assembly, the Highest Academic Achiever Evening, the International Women’s Day Breakfast and the Open Evening coming up next week!

The Senior Choir has sung beautifully at several of these occasions, and the Year 7 and 8 Choir stepped up, led by Ms Kara-Lee Rabetts, to perform at the Highest Academic Achiever Evening. She and the Choir are to be commended on their fine performance!

At the International Women’s Day Breakfast this week, the Senior Choir performed 'Truly Brave' with such passion and conviction to complement the theme of #BreaktheBias.

Cocurricular Music at Kilbreda has borne the brunt of the impacts of numerous lockdowns, and we are in a period of re-building the program and musical progress of the students.  It was very challenging for some students to maintain their music lessons online, so there is lots of work to be done.

Last month we held the annual Year 7 Instrument Tryout Day, where all Year 7 students participated in a round robin to try out at least 4 to 6 different instruments.  They all had a great time, and many have since taken up learning an instrument and will soon form the Training Orchestra on March 18.

The Middle Orchestra (Years 8 to 10) have also recommenced rehearsals on Thursday mornings and are making excellent progress.

Our Senior Ensemble was able to perform at the Music Information Evening, led by Mrs Rebecca Harkin.  After only two rehearsals, they sounded very accomplished, and some students then demonstrated their instruments for the Year 7 students and parents. The evening was very well attended, and there was quite an excited and enthusiastic buzz from families after the presentation as they considered their choice of instruments.

This year’s Junior College Production is 'High School Musical Jr' and auditions were held over three afternoons to find our cast of singers, dancers and actors. Interns have been appointed from the senior year levels to assist the Production Team. Rehearsals have been fantastic, with several numbers already looking great! The level of talent, and the number of students involved never ceases to astound me!

A very busy Term 1 will be capped off by a Music Concert on Tuesday 5 April at 7.00pm in the Auditorium. Our students are very much looking forward to performing for you once again after such a long spell without performances.  Also coming up next term is the annual Music Camp on 26 and 27 May.  Please make a note of these dates.

Our program could not happen without the time and expertise of our Music Tutors, who are working very hard to help our students catch up on lost learning and I am most appreciative of their support. Please remember to notify me, the tutor or Ella Wilson (AFL Trainee - Cocurricular Performing Arts), prior to any absence from a Music lesson, so that the lesson can be made up at a later date.

We look forward to seeing you at our concerts and the College Production!
