Foundation (Prep)

Hello and welcome back to Prep C!

Numeracy

This week in Maths, we have focused on 'teen' numbers. Students have practised reading, writing and making numbers between 10 and 19. When learning to write these two-digit numbers, we discuss what the one stands for (one bundle of ten) and the second number refers to how many ones are left over.

We also introduced Tally Marks. Each student designed a question, e.g. Do you like mango or watermelon? Cars or motorbikes? People or robots? They then used the tally marks to collect information from their classmates. At the end of the lesson we shared which was most popular.

Writer's Workshop

We are continuing to revisit the lowercase letters of the alphabet during daily handwriting sessions. We also practise blending the sounds together to make simple words.

The children are encouraged to have a go at writing a simple sentence in their writing books using the sounds that they can hear. At this stage, for most students, the key focus is developing the confidence to have a try.

Reader's Workshop

This week we focused on the letter Hh. We brainstormed words that we know that begin with this sound and made a list on the board. Students then had to read a word from the list, which was supported with a picture, and record it in their alphabet book.

We have also enjoyed the story, Hattie and The Fox, by Mem Fox. One of our reading tasks was to cut up a jumbled sentence from the story and put the words in the correct order. During these lessons the teacher models what to do (I do), we share parts of the task together (We do) and then students are encouraged to have a try independently (You do).

Earth Day

Thank you to all of the Prep families that have supported our 'Old Shoe Drive' this week. Today our class sorted the shoes into groups of 10 and then skip counted to see how many we had. We counted 91 and a half pairs of shoes! What a monster effort!! We then worked out, that would be 183 shoes. Amazing!

I'd also like to thank the parents for helping to arrange costumes for Earth Day. Everyone looked fantastic and we've had a great day.

The children are all very excited to meet Harold the Giraffe next Monday at our Life Education incursion.

I hope you all have a nice weekend.
