Vaping at HPSC
Vaping among students has been occurring at HPSC this term and we would like to share some information with you all about this practice so you can chat to your children about the risks to health that Vaping causes.
Electronic cigarettes (E-cigarettes) can contain high levels of nicotine. Adolescence is a critical period for brain development and exposure to nicotine can have long-term health consequences impacting memory, attention and learning.
E-cigarettes (Vapes) are often available in different flavours which can be appealing to young people. Sometimes vapes are disguised as USB’s, pens and cosmetics.
The aerosol, which many teens believe is harmless water vapor, actually consists of many chemicals, heavy metals, and fine particles — many of which are toxic and dangerous — that seep deep into the lungs and bloodstream when vaping. Second-hand smoke exposure can cause disease and premature death in children and adults who do not smoke. Specifically, children exposed to second-hand smoke experience a range of upper and lower respiratory illnesses and symptoms such as colds and flu, cough, phlegm production, wheezing and pneumonia.

- Talking to your child about why smoking/vaping are harmful for them. It is never too late to have the conversation. Talking About Vaping With Young People
- Learning about the different types of e-cigarettes available and the risks associated with using these products. We recommend parents/carers have a look at images of vapes online to familiarise what they can look like: Vaping Products
- Setting a good example by being tobacco free.
- Reading the HPSC Smoking Policy together with your child so they are aware of the rules and consequences of vaping. (hpsc.vic.edu.au) · Reporting those who are selling cigarettes and e-cigarettes to minors. Read about Victoria’s tobacco and e-cigarette laws.
Read more about the health risks of vaping below, and how to speak to young people about these risks.
