LEARNING & TEACHING - Vira Pirrotta

Our Cultural Day event was held on June 9th and was a great success, showcasing the tremendous diversity of our community. The day was planned to recognise, celebrate and learn about the various traditions and cultural backgrounds that coexist within our community.

The excitement began as we gathered to share and celebrate our unique backgrounds with a colourful parade. All the students wore something special to represent their respective cultures and paraded proudly around the hall. There were some amazing costumes, and all the students and families made a wonderful effort.  The students then had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of different cultures.

The students had a magnificent time dancing and drumming to the beats of the West Indies. Kofa led our students with excitement and the students enjoyed every minute. Micah and some Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students danced and played musical instruments as the other students watched and played along.

The students also had the opportunity to engage in workshops where they learnt about Indigenous history and artefacts. They listened to the digeridoo and learnt a traditional song from the Torres Straight Islands.

They ended the day with a show that highlighted the traditional costumes of Carnival in Venice and learnt about the characters, costumes and masks.

I hope that day and the interactive experiences fostered a sense of inclusivity and mutual respect for all.

13 Outdoor Maths Activities for Early Years to Y6

This link allows you to  explore the many ways you can do maths outdoors with your child.

As the holidays are approaching it may give you ideas to help your child see maths in their world and practise some of the skills they have learnt this year.

Finding numbers, shapes, counting and mapping just a few ideas to do as you walk, talk and find the maths outdoors.

Our students in Foundation are counting daily and learning to add collections. The juniors are also learning to add using strategies such as counting on from the largest number, using doubles, make 10, bridge 10 and adding tens. The middles have just finished learning about maps and giving directions using landmarks, compass points and scale. The seniors have been working on perimeters of shapes and efficient ways to work these out.

It's great to wander and listen to the students across the school doing Number talks and showing their thinking on solving problems using a variety of strategies.

Enjoy talking to your child about their learning in Maths . Help them see the maths in their daily life. Point to the clock and read the time, ask how long before its time to leave for school, go to bed.. Etc.. Ask the price of items while shopping, what if you bought two of these? Can they work out the change?  Involve them in the cooking, lots of measurement there!
