School Council Update
The School Council met on Monday 19 June. Here are the minutes of the meeting:
- Mr Chant gave us an update on the operations of the school. Parents teachers interviews went well. He noted that not all families could have time with the specialist teachers as they teach 500+ students which cannot be done in the time allocated to the interviews. The school will consider how to organise them in a way that allow more families to connect with the specialist teachers. The Open Mornings were also well received from parents.
- Mr Chant also gave us an overview of the school approach to questions raised through our community:
- The number of students per classrooms is continuously monitored by the school leadership and actively discussed with the teachers. Based on teachers’ feedbacks, classroom sizes are appropriate but note that the attention will depend on each class year. If any queries on this topic, please feel free to engage directly with the teacher and the School Leadership
- The School Leadership continuously work to build an inclusive school that support children with special needs. Resources supporting those children with special needs was discussed. The School Council also discussed ways to make the school more accessible as there many are stairs and the library in the main building is difficult to access.
- Marc Warshall, Treasurer, gave an update on the School’s finances. We keep on tracking Voluntary Contributions and are seeking our communities’ support to deliver the curriculum and improve our infrastructure. The school is in process of applying for the opening of a Building Fund which will allow tax deductibility for donations from our generous community. This is an essential step to find more ways to seek support the improvements of the school.
- We are progressing the refresh of our Buildings and Grounds. You would have seen the replacement of the old sand pit which is now replaced by artificial turf, increasing the play space for our junior students. Other initiatives will progress during the year. We wanted to thank the Parents Committee and our community for their contributions to make our school a better place for our students.
- Mental and physical wellbeing is at the heart of the school’s priorities. The School Council and the School Leadership reiterate that inappropriate behaviour to students, families and the school staff is unacceptable. It is our duty to offer a safe learning and teaching environment to all our students and the staff. In collaboration with the School Council, the school is preparing a communication campaign across term 3 to raise awareness about expected appropriate behaviour at school, importance of speaking up and process for remediation.
I wanted to personally thank the School Leadership for their transparency and openness to address school matters that can sometimes be complex and multi-faceted.
