Sustainability

World Environment Day!

Thank you to everyone who came along to our World Environment Day lunchtime club. Led by the Green Team members, we had a range of fun activities for all years to participate in. Students enjoyed colouring in, word searches, making bird feeders and making their own seedling!

Walk or Wheel Wednesday

As we come to the end of a term, we will be wrapping up Walk or Wheel Wednesday. Thank you to everyone who has participated in Walk or Wheel Wednesday this term and has made an effort to reduce their carbon footprint by walking, scooting or wheeling to school. We hope we have encouraged you to make this a regular part of your routine.

Year 1/2 Excursion to Ceres

During Week 6, three of our Year 1 students stood up in assembly to share their recently excursion to Ceres. We are very proud to share our school and photos of what our students presented at assembly.

Well done, Amelia, Mae and Alfie!

“On Tuesday the Year Ones and Twos went on an excursion to CERES. We did the Towards Zero Waste program and learnt about how to reduce waste and be sustainable.

One of the activities was finding out about what happens to the waste that human’s make. We did a scavenger hunt to find things in nature and we even got to hold a worm! It felt so ticklish.

Did you know that people are cutting down our special trees to make paper? Another activity we did was making paper out of recycled shredded paper, like this. The teacher at CERES showed us a piece of paper that was made out of kangaroo poo! You can use lots of different things to make paper, this helps to save the trees.

The other activity was walking to the Merri Merri creek. The words Merri Merri means rocky rocky because the creek is filled with bluestone. We noticed there was lots of litter in the creek. The people at CERES are working hard to help clean up the creek using a crane and a special rubbish trap to stop the waste going into the creek.

There are 6 Rs for sustainability and you can use them every day! Year 1s and 2s please stand up.

Rethink, Refuse, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, Rot

We hope you have a lovely weekend and remember the 6 Rs!”

Solway Parent Community Sustainability Sub-Committee Team

The Solway community sustainability team has had two catchups recently, which we organised through our new WhatsApp group (please join us!).

  • 31 May - kitchen garden, adults only session, to prepare for new winter plants
  • 1 June - kitchen garden, with Grade 1/2s to plant the plants!

Thank you to all who came along to either of these sessions - David, Vicki, Maria, Blake, Anne - apologies if I’ve missed anyone.  I forgot to take a “before” picture of the overgrown garden full of weeds, but the garden is now ready for compost and baby plants.

We have two upcoming get togethers to talk about sustainability at Solway, so if you are interested in coming along, please do!

  •  Thursday 15 June after school
  •  Wednesday 21 June after school

We will meet at the performing arts room amphitheatre, or if it rains we will go around the corner to the sheltered tables outside the library.

Hope to see you there.
