PLT Spotlight

Year 1

We are so happy to share with you some of the exciting activities our Year 1 students have been engaged in during this term.  In Maths, we have been developing a range of strategies to solve subtraction problems.  We have been using techniques such as using concrete materials, number lines and modelling with pictures to represent and tackle simple subtraction challenges.  Additionally, we have been focusing on telling the time with digital and analogue clocks.  We have worked on identifying the different parts of a clock and developing an understanding of the concepts “O’clock” and “Half Past” times.  We have successfully modelled times on our clocks and discovered various events that occur at specific times, such as having lunch at 2 o’clock.

In Writing, we have been honing our skills in creating procedures.  We have learned to create recipes such as, ‘How to Cook Popcorn’, tasks including ‘How to Make a Paper Aeroplane’ and the imaginative “How to Sneak Your Monster into School," based on the book by Christopher Francis.  While writing these procedures, we have learned how to create engaging titles, write clear goals, compile lists of materials, and include sequenced steps.

In Reading, we have been discovering how books and digital texts are organized.  We have looked at navigating through page numbers, table of contents, headings, images with captions and scrolling to access digital texts.  We have also been identifying and analysing nonfiction text features, such as contents, index, bold letters, and diagrams, which assist in comprehending and exploring our way through various texts.

Lastly, in Spelling, we have been working on recognizing short vowels, common long vowels, consonant digraphs, and blends.  These essential building blocks of language are fostering the ability to read and spell with confidence and accuracy.

We are incredibly proud of the progress our students have made in these subjects, and we are excited to see their continued growth throughout the year.  Thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement.
