Helping your child cope with possible back to school anxiety.

We are excited to receive our Foundation to Year 2 students back to school on Tuesday May 26th and also aware that some students may be feeling anxious about this transition back to school.

Below are some tips that may assist your young person.

When children feel anxious about going back, it’s important to talk with them about the transition.

Find a time to talk when your child is relatively calm.  (Avoid times like when your child is upset or getting ready for school.)

Here are some things you can say:

  • “Let’s think of some ways I can help make going back to school easier for you.” Start by suggesting a few simple things, like packing a special snack  or making a card for a special friend to give to them at school. But make it clear that staying home from school just because your child wants to isn’t an option.
  • “What do you like about school?” Highlight these positive moments and use them as a reminder that school can be rewarding and fun.
  • “Is there anything in particular about this school year that’s worrying you?” Talking about your child’s specific concerns can help you find specific solutions.

We have added some social stories aimed at Foundation to Year 2 children to help them understand the transition back to school on our website.

Let's get creative!

Grab some crayons, texters, pencils, paper, glue, photos and magazine cut outs and have your children arrange items on a piece of paper. Talk about the items they chose and why they are grateful for them. If you want, get really creative and include other materials such as string, glitter, sequins or any other materials you may have lying around the house to decorate your child's work. Cut out images, draw them yourself or create a mindmap, the choice is yours!

Another fun idea is to give your children a camera and have them take photos of everything they are thankful for. You can post the images in an online photo album or even create a gratitude photo book using their shots!
