Last Thursday 10 May, the College held its Talent Quest Finals in the Bro Leo Scollen Stadium with over 600 people in attendance.

SIS Public Speaking

On 1 May, the annual SIS Public Speaking Competition was held at John Paul College, Frankston. St John’s was represented by Rim Simon, Maria Hinen and Vanshita Udasi.

Students spoke for four minutes on one of the prepared topics below:

How private is the private life of public figures
Are Australia’s gun laws too strict?
Zombie protection is a valid skill
Do our schools prepare us for the 21st Century?
The world is not as scary as it seems

and ‘Unprepared Topics’ for three minutes.

Our girls were well prepared and performed creditably, gaining an average score of 75/100 for their talks and they were placed 4th out of the eight schools competing. Well done girls.

Women's Mentors Breakfast

The ‘Women’s Mentor Breakfast’ was an enjoyable morning. Arriving there at 7am was a bit of a struggle but what came out of it was something unforgettable. Guest speaker, Samantha Lane, spoke about her life and journalism career and how she rose to success. She also spoke about the difficult challenges that she faced and how those complications pushed and drove her to where she is today.

The table I sat at was the ‘Education Training’, I spoke to a Secondary school teacher about her career which gave me an insight on teaching. By talking to people on my table it opened up my knowledge in a career of education. I learnt many valuable lessons and skills that I will use throughout my life.

This year I was invited to the Girl Guides Women of Note, Casey Mentor Breakfast. Five other Year 11 girls came along to enjoy this great experience at the Bunjil Place Function Centre.

We were seated at tables that had a mixture of students and mentors. These mentors were other women who where successful in their careers and work. We also got to listen to guest speaker Samantha Lane, who talked with us about her life and how her career began. She is an amazing journalist who really got us thinking about our own choices and futures.

Australian Economics and Business Studies Competition

Over the past 2 weeks, students from Year 12 Business Management and Economics voluntarily took part in the Australian Business Studies and Economics competition. As VCE is state-based, this is one of the few opportunities students have to compare their level of performance in these areas to other students across the country.

The two separate competitions cover general content areas, plus reward students who have an understanding of Economics and Business current affairs. This is the first time in a while St John’s has participated in this nationally-recognised competition, which is facilitated by the prestigious University of NSW’s Business School.

Students will find out how they went when results are released in August. They should be congratulated for their commitment to furthering their studies and passion for learning.

Year 9 Italian visit the NGV

Ciao! On Tuesday 1 May, the year nine students studying Italian went on an excursion to the National Gallery of Victoria. Both of our classes separated and then were taken by a guide who showed us some of the Renaissance artwork by famous Italian artists.

We learnt about the history of art throughout its many forms, symbolism within the paintings and about famous people whose portraits had been painted as well as the painters who had painted them. Walking through the gallery and its many collections was inspiring and left us in amazement as we walked past incredible talent.
