Literacy Notes

This week's Literacy Notes is dedicated to our 2019 Book Week celebrations based on the theme ‘Reading is My Secret Power!’.

During Library Lessons, Prep, Year One and Year Two have been looking at the CBCA short listed books and all year levels have completed activities relating to these books and the ‘Secret Powers’ theme - take a look below!

Prep

Prep students read ‘The Dress-Up Box’ and drew lovely pictures.

Year 1

Year 1 students completed an exciting book report and book cover activity based on their favourite picture story book. They also made superheroes with secret reading powers.

Year 2

Year  2 students wrote about the fantastic secret powers that reading gives them! They also drew cicadas after reading ‘Cicada’ by S. Tan, made bookmarks, read ‘Here Comes Stinkbug!’ by T. Riddle and made lovely insects.

After reading ‘Heads and Tails: Insects’ by J. Canty, the Year 2 students made 'Who Am I?' stories about insects to tie in with their current Unit of Inquiry.

Year 3

Year 3 students made cuffs and headbands regarding super reading powers for the Book Parade. Using alliteration, they cleverly wrote on the headbands, their Superhero name with a secret reading power e.g. Curious Clementine and Listening Lucy!

Year 4

Year 4 students read a passage from ‘His Name Was Walter’ by E. Rodda and then wrote about what they wondered and drew what they imagined from text.

Year 4 students also wrote a reflection regarding the Book Parade.

Year 5

Year 5 students read a few of the CBCA short listed books and from Jaclyn Moriarty’s, ‘The Slightly Alarming Tale of the Whispering Wars’. They followed up by writing stories with voices.

Year 6

Year 6 students studied the book ‘Chalk Boy’ by M. Wild and followed up with an art activity where they were given a squiggle to add to artistically to make a superpower hero.

The Year 6 students also made ‘Reading is my Secret Power’ Book Week posters.
