Maths Update & Resources

Maths in Year 5

As part of our 'How We Organise Ourselves' Unit of Inquiry, Year 5 students have begun their 'Let’s Get Down to Business' investigation. All students have been assigned jobs that relate to the real world and are paid a certain wage accordingly.

Each Wednesday, payroll organise payslips and students take them to the bank to add to their account. Students need to figure out their Gross Income, 10% Superannuation, 15% tax and Net Income each week to ensure payroll has paid them correctly. Students are also tasked with keeping a running transaction balance sheet where they must add and subtract in deposits and withdrawals made throughout the week. Withdrawals may be rent (for their tables), fines or something they have chosen to buy at the auction!

EdShop Maths

Our school subscribes to EdShop Maths and receives weekly worded Maths based problems based on current topics shared in the media. Not only do students learn about current events, they also build on their problem-solving skills. There are four levels of difficulty (lower, middle, upper and extension) and the questions cover all areas of the Maths curriculum. Here are some for you to work on with your child at home (PDFs for each level attached below).
