UPCOMING EVENTS/ACTIVITIES

The boys have settled into the second semester and are hopefully working towards achieving their goals.  The week began with a lovely Kokoda Assembly and the Year 12 prefects had an opportunity to speak to the school before they commence their trial exams.  Yesterday the boys sat the University of NSW, ICAS English exam and we had complete attendance from Year 5 which was excellent. Year 6 will have an incursion this Thursday on Cyber safety from our local police liaison officer, Darren Cairns.  On Thursday we will welcome the Kawanishi Rugby school from Japan.  They will play the Prep 1st team.  Many thanks to Mr and Mrs Patterson for their planning of this event.  We hosted the Kawanishi Rugby School two years ago and we wish them all the best for their visit to Australia.

We have the P&F Trivia night this Saturday night.  Please refer to the P& F section if you wish to go and take on the teachers’ table!

IPSHA PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL

The Junior School choir had a very successful practice with the other schools involved in the IPSHA performing arts festival.  They will be singing at the Sydney Town Hall on Tuesday 14th August.  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many people.  Ticketing through try booking is available now.  Parents have a week to secure tickets before we open them up to the extended family.  Please refer to Ms Bates performing arts section for details.

WORLD OF MATHS

Year 5 will be experiencing an interactive mathematical problem solving experience next Monday.  The incursion is entitled ‘World of Maths.’ This should make a good dinner table conversation.

From the Rugby Club

The Rugby Supporters’ Club Committee would like to express their appreciation to the SPX rugby community for its support in respect to the recent Annual Rugby Club Fundraising Dinner held at the Roseville Golf Club.

As a consequence of this support, and the support of the contributors to the evening, and those who attended the dinner, the Rugby Club were able to raise over $23,000 that will be able to be put towards assisting the College in respect to the on-going development of the rugby program at SPX (both Junior and Senior College).

Rugby Club ‘End of Season Social Get Together’ – Saturday, 25th August, The Willoughby Hotel:  As a ‘thank you’ to all our SPX Rugby Supporters, the Rugby Club will be holding an ‘End of Season Social Get Together’ at the Willoughby Hotel (315 Penshurst Street, Willoughby) from 5pm on Saturday 25th August. The Rugby Club, through the hotel, will provide a good selection of high quality ‘stand-up’ food and the only thing that those attending will need to pay for will be their own drinks at normal pub bar prices.

We will have the whole first floor to ourselves with two televisions showing live coverage of the Wallabies v All Blacks Bledisloe Cup Test Match from Eden Park in New Zealand from 5.30pm. (There will be plenty of room for those that want to get away from the televisions).

Children are most welcome – we will also have a table tennis competition on the night for the children.

On the night there will be a number of Lucky Door prizes, including the opportunity to win two free tickets to the 2019 SPX Rugby Club Dinner, and a free ticket to the inaugural Rugby Club Golf Day to be held at the Roseville Golf Club on Wednesday, 28 November from 1pm.

There will be no fundraising at this function so the only thing you will need money for are your own drinks!  This link will take you directly to the TryBooking Site to book your free tickets: www.trybooking.com/390673

St Pius X Monster Rugby Raffle:  This week all rugby families at the College will receive a book of 20 x $5 raffle tickets to sell during the remaining weeks of the season. The raffle booklets will be handed out to the rugby boys at the College/Oxford

Falls. The raffle has ten great prizes with the first prize a ‘Hunter Valley Accommodation Experience’ valued in excess of $1,500. Money raised from this raffle goes directly back to students through the provision of physiotherapists, external rugby coaching staff, rugby tour cost assistance, junior referee accreditation, etc. All tickets and monies are to be returned to school via the silver box at the Finance Office, sold or unsold, by Wednesday 22nd August, in a sealed  envelope with the family's name clearly marked on the front. The raffle will be drawn at the Rugby Club social on Saturday 25th August.

For every full book of 20 tickets that a student sells he will get a ticket in a raffle with the chance to win a $200 gift voucher.  There will be separate raffles for students in the Junior College and the Senior College.

Save the Date:  Wednesday 28 November 2018 – Inaugural SPX Rugby Club Golf Day at Roseville Golf Club from 1pm – ‘Ambrose Shotgun Start’.   Further details next week.

FOOTBALL:  Rounds 8 and 9 - Draw for Saturday 3rd August

Mr P Cummins - Junior Football Convenor

AFL:

Even though it had been a long break the start to the game against Knox continued with dominant play by the Pius team. Our attack was strong with the majority of possession, but goal scoring was off target. Once we looked for players in better goal kicking positions the accuracy improved. Sam Hollinger, playing in the forwards in the first quarter, scored an outstanding goal, but once Knox started to gain momentum in attack, he was quickly moved to strengthen our defensive end. Lucas Spinetti was excellent in defence, using his body to protect the ball and to effectively hand pass to his team mates. Xavier Dwyer tried to involve himself in attack with quick releases and a first attempt at goal.

While scoring long range goals may look impressive, as one parent commented, it is much more entertaining when there is flowing team play where all players kick or hand pass to each other down the field. Let’s keep working on this in our last two matches!

  • Player Points:  3 - Sam Hollinger;   2 - Lucas Spinetti ;  1 – Xavier Dwyer
  • Next game:   Saturday 4th August v Newington - 9:15am at Pioneers Park, Malabar
