Football

Dear Parents and Players,

A huge congratulations to the mighty 13D side.  They managed their first win of the season on Saturday, a tremendous effort for our youngest side who play up a division.

This Saturday we are hosting our traditional rival, St Patrick’s Strathfield. This weekend is supporters weekend at Oxford Falls so it would be great to see as much support for all teams, especially the 1st XI who hope to remain undefeated in the ISA. Kick off is at 9:15am on Walsh Oval.

Tonight we wish 2017 Football Captain, Alec Vinci good luck playing in the FFA cup for A-League side the Central Coast Mariners against Adelaide United.  A tremendous achievement to be named in the playing squad of an A-League side at the age of 18.

Good luck to all teams this weekend.

Mr S Yue - Senior Football Convenor

FOOTBALL CLUB NEWS

It was a tough round last week but we saw some good results.  The 1st XI and 14As remain undefeated with two rounds to go.  Thanks to those parents who helped the Committee  in the BBQ Kiosk at Oxford Falls last Saturday.

This week we ask all parents to capture a full team shot for the end of season wrap-up for ‘ Year in Review’.  We really need these team photos - please check that all boys are happy to be in the photo.

Send your photos to footballspx@gmail.com  - save this to your phone and upload those photos as soon as you take then.

The Football Committee has collected some great auction items for this Saturday’s Trivia Night.  Go to the bidding site and check them out.  All funds raised for the event get distributed across the SPX clubs to continue funding activities which directly assist your boys.

St Pius X Senior Rugby Fixtures 4th August 2018

This weekend is the final home game of the season, with all sides playing against St Patrick's College. A free BBQ and drink will be on offer for all those students who stay and support the 1st XV kicking off at 2:15pm.

Saturday's game will be extra special with both 1st XV sides playing in their Indigenous jersey and, as ambassadors of reconciliation, we will acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional owners of the land and all Aboriginal people.

FROM THE RUGBY DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

Joint Champions

Our flagship team, the 16As, fought out a spine-tingling encounter with St Augustine’s on Saturday. This game decided which team would be declared champions.

In 30 years of coaching I can’t recall a result of nil nil. This doesn’t detract from the quality as both sides strove manfully to score but resolute, and at times desperate, defence prevailed. Both St Pius and St Augustine’s are now joint champions. Two fixtures remain and I’m sure under Mr Pawlak’s stewardship our 16s will look to finish with emphatic wins against St Pat’s and St Greg’s.

Elsewhere it was a tough day at the office. Needless to say our spirit and commitment was solid throughout but at Opens level it is hard to compete with scholarship-providing schools who buy in talent.

This week we entertain St Pat's, our sternest rivals ... no motivation will be needed!!

FROM THE RUGBY CLUB

Save the Date:  Wednesday, 28 November 2018 – Inaugural SPX Rugby Club Golf Day at Roseville Golf Club  from 1pm – ‘Ambrose Shotgun Start’.   Further details next week.

Rugby Club ‘End of Season Social Get Together’ – Saturday, 25th August, The Willoughby Hotel:  As a ‘thank you’ to all our SPX Rugby Supporters, the Rugby Club will be holding an ‘End of Season Social Get Together’ at the Willoughby Hotel (315 Penshurst Street, Willoughby) from 5pm on Saturday 25th August. The Rugby Club, through the hotel, will provide a good selection of high quality ‘stand-up’ food and the only thing that those attending will need to pay for will be their own drinks at normal pub bar prices.

We will have the whole first floor to ourselves with two televisions showing live coverage of the Wallabies v All Blacks Bledisloe Cup Test Match from Eden Park in New Zealand from 5.30pm. (There will be plenty of room for those that want to get away from the televisions).

Children are most welcome – we will also have a table tennis competition on the night for the children.

On the night there will be a number of Lucky Door prizes, including the opportunity to win two free tickets to the 2019 SPX Rugby Club Dinner, and a free ticket to the inaugural Rugby Club Golf Day to be held at the Roseville Golf Club on 28 November 2018.

There will be no fundraising at this function so the only thing you will need money for are your own drinks!  This link will take you directly to the TryBooking Site to book your free tickets: www.trybooking.com/390673

St Pius X Monster Rugby Raffle:  This week all rugby families at the College will receive a book of 20 x $5 raffle tickets to sell during the remaining weeks of the season. The raffle booklets will be handed out to the rugby boys at the College/Oxford Falls.

The raffle has ten great prizes with the first prize a ‘Hunter Valley Accommodation Experience’ valued in excess of $1,500. Money raised from this raffle goes directly back to students through the provision of physiotherapists, external rugby coaching staff, rugby tour cost assistance, junior referee accreditation, etc.

All tickets and monies are to be returned to school via the silver box at the Finance Office, sold or unsold, by Wednesday 22nd August, in a sealed  envelope with the family's name clearly marked on the front. The raffle will be drawn at the Rugby Club social on Saturday 25th August.

For every full book of 20 tickets that a student sells he will get a ticket in a raffle with the chance to win a $200 gift voucher.  There will be separate raffles for students in the Junior College and the Senior College.

Paul O'Neill - President SPX Rugby Club

ISA Tennis

Round 8 of our competition saw lots of success for our Pius players, which is promising for this pointy end of the 2018 season. Congratulations to our Division 1, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 9 teams for some convincing wins on the court. As usual, our players brought sportsmanship and maturity to their matches and all boys should be proud of their performances.

Currently, the ISA competition rankings see Division 7 sitting in 2nd place and Divisions 5 and 9 in 3rd place, so best of luck to these teams. Remember every point counts!

This weekend we are playing against Oxley College and Redlands - see the draw below.
