FIJI COMMUNITY SERVICE TRIP

FIJI COMMUNITY SERVICE TRIP

Let me be the first one to say what a year we have had! 2019 has been the best year for VCAL yet.

As a class we worked towards fundraising for our community service trip to Fiji and what an amazing experience it was!

During our stay we did several hours of community service helping out by painting the local community church, installing paths, prepping and serving meals to a local women’s shelter and helping build and finalise composting toilets.

While over in Fiji we went up into the Nasouri Highlands and spent 2 nights in the local village, staying with our host families. This experience taught us so much about respect and gratitude. We lived with families that were without power or furniture yet were the happiest people on Earth.

This taught our group how less can be more.

On another note, our seniors have just finished for the year. We will miss them and wish them the best for the future. Moving forward we are really excited to welcome the new members to VCAL for 2020 who will be starting with us in jumpstart.

VCAL PROJECT

Members of our VCAL class have created special bins that will be place strategically around the school in high traffic areas of rubbish collection. These bins are split into two sections, one section for recycling and one section for green waste. We will put the bins out for a couple of weeks to test the strategy and by doing so contribute to helping our school environment. Our bins will be placed in the canteen, the senior learning centre,  year 8 locker bays and outside the junior learning centre.

MY KITCHEN RULES 2019

On Wednesday the 30th of October MESC MKR took place in the Food & Technology kitchen. Twenty students participated from Years 7 to 10. The students worked in pairs to create a two course meal suitable for a lunch. They had 90 minutes to prepare and plate up their two recipes before judging took place.

Five staff members and two students from the leadership team (Callum Mann and Samantha Howlett) judged the competition. After much tasting and sensory analysis the scores were tallied and announced. The overall winners of MESC MKR 2019 with their beef burger & potato chips (all homemade including bread roll) and chocolate lava cake was Monty Jacques and Liam Bald.

The judges said that everyone did a fantastic job and they loved the task of tasting and grading the students cooking. Congratulations to Monty and Liam and to all the students who participated.
