Multicultural Sunday

Year 9 Retreat

“Me, Myself and I”   Thursday 24th October

Coordinated by The Lasallian Youth Ministry Team

This retreat helps students to gain a better understanding of who they are, how their experiences shape their worldviews, and how faith guides us in becoming more fully ourselves.

Session 1: will begin to unpack that we are multifaceted, multidimensional human beings, which means that we are all unique. Using different examples, it will tap into the students’ knowledge of themselves as a foundation for the rest of the day.

Session II: will revolve around a personality quiz, delving further into the idea that each of us are unique, and helping students to define themselves and how their personalities shape their interactions with the world around them.

Session III: will provide students with the opportunity to reflect on who they are, and provide the students with tools to continue to discover themselves.

Year 10 Leadership Day

“Service. Opportunity. Sacrifice. (SOS)"  25th October

Coordinated by The Lasallian Youth Ministry Team

We are called to answer the SOS call of our fellow neighbours, friends and fellow humans. We are invited to take up this call to be on a mission by Jesus and De La Salle. At the end of the day the students will explore the notion that to serve takes some sacrifice.

Service: We want to show that service is an attitude! Service is seeing a need and doing something about it. If you have a heart for service  you will receive and grow. If you go beyond yourself to serve you are better for it. Christ served in so many ways. Service is looking at the heart of the other person and allowing their priorities to take first place.

Opportunities: We live in the land of opportunities, Australia, and are lucky to be able to have the opportunity to serve and go out. But it is all potential. We need to say yes and take hold of the opportunity.

Sacrifice: To serve is to love. Jesus radically defines ultimate love as lying yourself down for a friend/ stranger/ fellow traveler on the journey. To sacrifice is to put someone else in your place of preference. Students will be asked… What are you willing to sacrifice? And who for? Jesus endured the ultimate sacrifice for us by dying on the cross.

Around the Classes

Year 11’s have begun their first HSC unit

Studies of Religion 1 & II unit  are studying “Religion and Belief systems in Australia post ‘45”.  This is study is religious expression in Australia’s multicultural and multi-faith society since 1945. The study includes an appreciation of Aboriginal spiritualities and their contribution to an understanding of religious beliefs and religious expression in Australia today.

Studies in Catholic Thought are studying “Virtue, Vice & Salvation”

In this unit students investigate the challenge of evil and suffering in the world. Students consider where God is in both ‘the good’ and ‘the evil’. Students explore the works of St Paul and other theologians and encyclicals, which developed a Christian framework for understanding what is the good, how to be good and the gift of grace. The Key Inquiry Questions are:

What is the ‘good’ life and some of its challenges?

What did original goodness look like and how was it disrupted?

How do faith and reason contribute to the path back to the good life?

What are the rewards for the good life?

Year 10’s are studying ‘The Gospels, who do people say I am”

In this unit students will examine the Gospels as the accounts of Jesus’ life and teachings and as testimonies to the faith of the early Church in Jesus as the Christ as well as their significance in the lives of Christians today. The Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, wrote these accounts from their own perspectives, taking into account the oral tradition, the historical, social and political contexts of the communities to which they belonged as well as the needs of their communities. Students will develop an understanding of the Biblical tradition of exegesis to identify the person of Jesus as presented by the Gospel writers, as well as points of comparison and contrast between Gospel accounts. They will also examine art and literary forms to assist them in responding to Jesus’ question- "Who do you say I am?" (Mark 8: 29)

Year 9’s are studying “ The Church in Australia”

In this unit students learn about how the Catholic Church is a community; a family with a history and a story that continues to unfold today. Catholics in Australia come from many different cultural backgrounds and celebrate their faith in many diverse ways. For all of its diversity and unique character, the Australian Church remains firmly a part of the universal Church, founded on the teachings of Jesus Christ, and participating in its mission. In this unit students will explore the rich common heritage and diverse contemporary expressions of the Catholic faith in its uniquely Australian context.

Year 8’s are studying “Alive in Christ”

This unit develops values, understanding and skills in relation to Catholic moral teaching, its relationship to moral character, the way it addresses moral issues and the call to work for justice in the world. It should assist students to appreciate their personal responsibility for moral decision-making, believe in their own potential to effect change, and apply principles of justice and compassion in their lives

Year 7’s are studying “Stewards of Creation”

This unit explores the action of God in creation, the reality of good and evil, and the human search for meaning in life. It hopes that students will reflect on and appreciate the diverse expressions of God’s presence in the world, respect the religious diversity of humanity, acknowledge the tension between good and evil, make informed responses in their search for meaning, and be open to the need to integrate religion with life.

Let us Pray
