Year 10 Pastoral Guardian

Connection and Engagement. This term we have made a clear focus as a year group on connecting as a cohort and engaging in class. I am pleased to say our connection is growing and our engagement in class has seen an increase with pleasing feedback from teachers.  In terms of connection, we have started Friday Funday Involving lunchtime handball and tunes playing on the Rooftop Terrace. This has been a success and has got the girls up and moving at lunchtime interacting with people outside of their standard social circles.  Additionally, towards the end of the term we are looking to hold an afternoon of celebration and connection so please keep an eye out for a save the date and permission. I strongly encourage all our young people to attend to keep expanding their connections with others to create a memorable and meaningful journey in their final years of school. Engagement in our learning has improved and it is pleasing to see the number of students engaging in academic mentoring sessions after school.

Additionally, I hope you have seen and increase in effort at home with the willingness to prioritise assessment and homework and put in an early effort rather than leaving things till week 7 and 8. I encourage you to really acknowledge your young persons efforts if you have seen an increase in capacity, effort and commitment to their study. In 13 weeks, our year 10 students will be progressing to the Senior phase of their high schooling journey, and it is imperative during this time that they really start to cement these habits into their weekly routine and build confidence around their capacity to engage and learn.

This week my parent corner will be focusing on the SPECIAL REPORT: Sextortion | Mount Alvernia College (schooltv.me). Across the year 10 cohort we see our young people prominently engaged in social media interactions and we need to be aware of what sites they are engaging with and how we can continue to support them to be safe online. Sexual extortion or Sextortion is a serious form of image-based abuse. The process of sexual extortion can happen on any interactive service, including image and video sharing, instant messaging, or social media apps. We see our young people using apps like Snapchat, Instagram, Messenger etc. and it is important we are always educating ourselves and giving timely reminds that when interacting online there is still risk involved and we need to protect ourselves in these environments. I strongly encourage you to view this week’s special addition and look to see what you can do to support your young person. Below are some key websites with resources, tips, videos and podcasts.

Thanks again for your continuous support and as always I am only a phone or email away. Please reach out, I am here to help and support your daughter.
