Year 12 Pastoral Guardian

Karen Farrow

Year 12 countdown is on. Last week, our seniors were excited to celebrate 100 days until Graduation with a gold theme, balloon arch, decorated tables, shared food, dress ups and music. It was a fun, memorable day amidst the concentrated classes focussed on revision and for some classes, final assessments. We have encouraged the Year 12s to be calm and focused in their final weeks leading to the Mock Exams in preparation for external QCAA exams and to avoid catastrophising, as this tends to be contagious.  A positive, confident, “can do” approach is our goal in entering exams.

In our Personal Development Program, our young adults have learned life skill sessions about the real costs of a car, changing a tyre with wonderful Ms Gibbons, Centrelink, Leaving Home and in Week 6 and 7, credit and debit card debt, and safe sex.  Incidentally, the topic for schooltv  Sextortion focusing on staying safe is a most relevant take-away this week for our young adult and adult age group with videos, articles and a poll, covering topics from the eSafety Commissioner such as sexual extortion, sending nudes and sexting, unwanted contact, online pornography, your digital reputation, online scams and identity theft. The links present informative and important reading for parents and students who may be vulnerable at this age for discussion at home.

I am proud of the leadership that Year 12s and their House captains have demonstrated in preparing younger year levels for the Battle of the Houses for the upcoming Cultural Festival. It is the last of the festivals for our Year 12s as their schooling draws to a close, but it is always a cherished day. We have special Year 12 events in Term Four, such as our traditional celebratory Pink Day on our final day of formal learning before compulsory revision weeks, Evolution Day, and Graduation events. Please refer to the notices about Term 4 that have been emailed to parents and the Year 12 cohort to assist your planning of events for the closing of the year and your young adult’s school journey.

I wish the students every success in the Mock Exams starting on Friday 26 August.
