Year 7-10 House Athletics Carnival

Thank you to all of the students and staff who attended the Cheltenham Athletics Carnival on Thursday 25th August,  your enthusiasm and positive attitude were greatly appreciated. We braved the weather in the morning and were rewarded with a glorious afternoon of sunshine. Congratulations to all the competitors on the day, your willingness to put yourself out there and have a go is far greater than any ribbon.

The day was a great success! Thank you to Mr Smart and Mr Knox for organising all of the important details and to all the staff who attended and carried out duties. Thank you to  Mr Collings and his Year 11 VCAL Personal Development class. The students worked very hard in the lead-up to the carnival and spent time and effort learning the rules and regulations of Track and Field Athletics so that they could run activities and events on the day. As well as taking care of the sausage sizzle to feed the hungry masses. Thanks, VCAL 11!

Congratulations to the 32 students who qualified for the Beachside Track and Field Event and returned to Mentone Athletics the following week.  Mrs Hargreaves, Mr Sanders and Mr Smart were very proud of the group, who did their best and displayed our college values throughout the day.

Beachside Athletics

Congratulations to the following students that went on to win their events at the Beachside Track and Field Day, thank you for representing our college. The next stage is the Southern Metro Region, these students will once again represent Cheltenham, when we travel to the Casey Fields Regional Athletics Centre on Thursday 6 October.

VCAL wrap up

The Intermediate VCAL class started their preparation for the 2022 House Aths Day two weeks prior to the event. They did a stocktake of the equipment required such as rakes, shot puts, javelins, discus' and any other equipment needed for the day. On the day, the whole group got to school early and packed the bus and helped set up the event down at the track before the Year 7-10 students arrived.

They also helped Mr Knox and Mr Smart write the rules and regulations for each event and they learnt how to officiate each event prior to the day also.

There was a BBQ group that ensured we had sausages, bread and drinks to raise money for the Pat Cronin Foundation, who had recently presented the importance of non-violent reactions and choices to our Year 9-12 students.  The success of the BBQ will see the college donating $600 to ensure that the ‘Coward Punch’ awareness promoted by the Pat Cronin Foundation, a free service that the foundation provides for schools, is not lost on students around the state.

The feedback after the event from staff and students was that the VCAL students did a fantastic job officiating and creating a great sense of community around the BBQ. They did such a good job they were rewarded with a pizza lunch to celebrate their efforts and they already can’t wait to organise next year's event.

The VCAL classes are an invaluable resource for the school and are always willing to assist with college events and should be commended for their positive attitude and the sense of community they show consistently.

Here are some of their thoughts and highlights from their experience as leaders on the day.

Athletics day was held on Thursday 25th of August held at the Mentone Athletics Track, the day started off not too well with a bit of rain but proceeded to clear up throughout the day. Charlee and I had to help out with the long jump for the morning then switched to helping out with the BBQ.

Charlee and I enjoyed watching the event play out and seeing who could jump the farthest and marking down their results.

In the afternoon we helped out with running the barbecue and handling the money. We managed to sell a ton of sausages we even had a bread shortage.

Last Thursday our VCAL class helped the year 7-10 athletics day by setting up, cooking the BBQ and hauling all the equipment back and forth and squeezing it all into the bus.

Most of us got here at 8.30am and we shortly made our way to Mentone Athletics Club.

Bailey and I helped Ms Dempster with javelin recording the measurements, it was pretty fun watching how far people can throw a javelin and the fails but the real highlight of the day was later in the day when we were on the BBQ and had the tunes pumping and everyone having a good time.

Overall it was a really good day as the sun started to come out and I had a really good time as a VCAL class.

On Thursday the 25th of August, our Year 11 VCAL class started to gather all the things that were needed for the athletics day and packed it all into the bus. At around 9.15am we made our way down to the track in Mentone.

When we got there everyone chipped in to help take off all the equipment and set up where it was needed. My first station was at the sausage sizzle. With the help of some other students we started the barbeque off well and sales began at around 10.30am, all of the events ran smoothly and at around 12pm we all changed stations and myself and Jackson moved to discus to help out with the officiating.

Both events that I helped out with ran smoothly and the day turned out to be a great success.

On Thursday the 25th our Year 11 VCAL class ran the 7-10 athletics day. It started off with lots of rain but eventually, the sun came out and it turned out to be a nice day. My first job was the long jump which was fun to watch, then I moved on to serving the sausages which was also fun but I must admit it was much harder than long jump.

On August the 25th, the Year 7s - 10s had their athletics day at Mentone Athletics Track.

The Year 11 VCAL class all helped with hosting the events and cooking the food. We were in partners and took turns holding different events. My partner was Mateo. We helped officiate the javelin with Ms Dempster from 9.30 - 11.30am. After that, we were cooking the barbeque with Mr Collings. Cooking the barbeque was the best part because we got free food and drinks. Overall it was a good experience and a fun day.

On Thursday the 25th of August our Year 11 VCAL class went to athletics day at Mentone to help run the event. We left at 9.00am in the morning to set up everything we needed and we got to the track at about 9.10am. We set up and then the Year 7, 8, 9 and 10s got to the track. Then we all went to certain roles and ran them until the afternoon. Then we did our second job until the end of the day. At the end of the day we packed up put everything in the bus and then went back to school to unpack everything.
