Prep News

Mrs Natasha Radley (Prep AHOS)

The holidays could not come quick enough for many of the Prep students. There are some very tired students at the end of Term 3! Well done to all the students (parents and teachers) who made it to the holidays. I wish you all a lovely break from the school rush and crazy after school activities. The last couple of weeks have been busy with the Preps doing lots of learning, including: programming BeeBots. They have also been learning about money and had a special canteen visit as a treat. The Preps had a lovely walk to the farm and a sneaky viewing of the Cumberland Concert rehearsals. The students enjoyed the last week of Term 3 and are already talking about Term 4.

Have a safe and happy term break. See you in a couple of weeks for some more amazing learning.

Beebot Fun in Prep!

Ms Megan Williams (Deputy Head of Primary)

Our Prep students have been looking at directional language in Maths and our Beebots popped in to have some fun. The students were coding the Beebots to go forward, backwards, turn left and turn right. Some creative students also decided to code the Beebots to go over the bridge and through the tunnel! Everyone is looking forward to working more with the Beebots next year!

Year 1 and 2 News

Mr Jevon Scandrett (Year 1/2 AHOS)

It is hard to believe we have reached the end of Term 3! This has been an exciting and memorable term for students in Year 1 and Year 2. Staff and students have worked hard to continue achieving successful learning and growth. I would like to thank parents and families for their continued support. I wish all students a safe and restful holiday, ready for an exciting final term of learning!

Year 2 students took part in an incursion with the local Greenvale Fire Brigade as part of their Life Skills unit, ‘Being Safe’. Students discussed safety surrounding fires and how to identify what is and is not an emergency. They also were prompted to think about a safe meeting place outside if there was ever a fire inside a house as well as what a Fire Safety Plan could look like at home.

Stella 2H

Fire fighters Amelia, Michael, Mick and Nick helped me understand fire safety and taught me about ‘Stop, drop, cover and roll’. We got to use the hose and gave the road a nice clean.

Freya 2H

I learnt to ‘get down low and go, go, go’. You do that when the smoke has risen and the space below is clean air. You should not breathe smoke.

Ajooni 2H

My favourite part was when they dressed up like how they do when they’re on a mission.

Xavier 2H

I liked the ‘crawl down, go go go’ because it was interesting to try it.

Jordynn 2M

I liked when the guy dressed up because he looked funny.

Ryan 2M

I liked the sirens because it was the first time I had ever heard the fire brigade sirens.

Liam 2A

I liked talking about good fires and bad fires because I really enjoyed guessing.

Senara 2A

I enjoyed when we got to do the ‘crawl down, go go go’ because we got to actually do it.

Coding Beebots with the Year 1's!

Ms Megan Williams (Deputy Head of Primary)

This term, the Year 1 students have been learning to code. They have been writing algorithms to get their Beebot to move around. They have learnt that the Beebot will do exactly what they code so they need to be precise in their coding to get the Beebot to go where they want.

As a celebration of our learning, this week, the Year 1 students combined their Integrated unit on community with their new coding skills. The students used the community buildings they have built, placed them around our Beebot mats and drove the Beebots around their communities, some even driving through a KFC drive thru!

Year 3 and 4 News

Mrs Anne Adams (Year 3/4 AHOS)

Another busy term comes to a close. The students have been lucky enough to have many varied learning experiences this term, concluding with the concert. A huge thank you to the Performing Arts staff for all of the hours that are put in behind the scenes to produce a concert. There will be many photos from the concert on the class blogs. There were too many to include here.

Here are some highlights from their learning.

Students in 3A have been working in pairs to learn about Australia and its neighbouring countries, through the game ‘Neighbours’.  Students need to demonstrate their knowledge of important facts about the countries including their flag, types of food they eat and the important landmarks found there.  Why don’t you have go at asking your child some questions about Australia and its neighbouring countries?

Araina C and Judah S - Year 4S

We have been learning about chance over the past couple of weeks. We were asked to create games. Our inspiration came from Monopoly but we then realised (in the creation) that we had to make 5 spinners, 7 sheets of paper and 29 questions which took more than one lesson to compete! We made the game by asking chance questions. Players had to spin the spinner which told them how many blocks they should move. Once the player landed on a block they answered the chance question – some were easy.

Jacob N and Mason K  - Year 4S

We were made to make chance games in class. Ours was called 'Animal Diseases'. There are two animals, lizard and frog. You could flip a coin or use a dice. You pick if your animal is heads or tails or a number on the dice. When you flip your head or tail or dice number, you get to cross out your animal. First to cross out all their animals wins! We got to play all the other games created in class too! It was soooo much fun playing our game – our game was even laminated!

Lyla B and Madeline L - Year 4S

It all started with bubble tea/boba, and that was just the beginning… In Maths, Maddie and I (Lyla) have been learning about chance. In doing so, we have created a bubble tea/boba game from our love of bubble tea while experimenting if our friends liked it or not and they loved it! So from that, we had a carousel of games in our class, where we rotated around and got to try out each other’s games. What a good experience that was! We got plenty of ideas from our friends. We had so much fun, we wish you were there!

Year 5 and 6 News

Mr Nigel Keegan (Year 5/6 AHOS)

What an exciting ten weeks we have had in Term 3! The learning experiences have been vast and valuable, both in and out of the classroom environment. Year 6 students had visits from the Royal Flying Doctors Service and the Victorian Fire Rescue Service. Year 5 visited the Immigration Museum and had a guest speaker visit to share his experiences and knowledge of Australian Immigration. All Year 5 and Year 6 students spent time with Healthy Harold, engaged with interesting and hands-on STEM activities, participated in sporting activities within the Friday morning sport program, competed in House Orienteering, and were involved in the Performing Arts program culminating in a brilliant Year 5 and Year 6 concert. These experiences have complimented the excellent learning across the range of subjects from Art and PE through to Maths, English and Integrated Studies. Thank you to students and teachers for all of your hard work, and to parents for your ongoing support this term. Have a safe and happy holiday.

Battle for Australia Excursion

Trisha J - 6P

On Wednesday 7 September, all the Year 9 and Year 6 Captains went to the Battle for Australia commemorative service. Many other schools also attended. The Captains attended the service at the Shrine of Remembrance, Victoria. The commemorative service was specially designed for young students to learn more about their country’s battle, history and how the army prevailed through it all. The service was held to recognise the importance and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for us today and the future of all Australian’s. The museum was very informative, with all the uniforms, badges and items of which the soldiers would wear. It was nice to see what the army and people supporting the battle would have looked and acted like during the war. The trip overall was very interesting, informative and enjoyable.

Primary Woodlands Division Athletics

A huge congratulations to all the students who competed in the Woodlands Division Athletics competition. They should be extremely proud of their effort and achievements. Congratulations also to the four students who made it through to the next level of competition: Mia P, Jasmina M, Charlie D and Rhys M

Cumberland Concert ‘We Belong’

This year’s theme for the Cumberland Concert was ‘We Belong’. This is such an appropriate theme for Cumberland students as this year we welcomed many new Primary students to the College. With the expansion of the Primary school from two classes to three classes at each year level, many adjustments had to be made. Making sure that all new students feel a sense of belonging and connectedness has been a priority. School connectedness enables students to feel valued and supported in their school environment and can have a positive influence on their social and emotional wellbeing.

Staff and students have put much effort into the concert, as well as having a lot of fun along the way. Our comperes Mia S, Claudia C and Amyra J, did a brilliant job confidently leading the way. A very big thank you goes to the Performing Arts staff, Ms Ebony McCarthy (Primary Concert Co-ordinator), Mr Jevon Scandrett, Mrs Natasha Radley, Ms Beth Thomson, Miss Rezz Ufacikligil (Technical Manager), Ms Elise Zijai (Head of Performing Arts Faculty) and Mr Glen Impey (Acting Music Co-ordinator) for leading the way, and to many other support staff and students and backstage crew. Also, thank you to the Cumberland Homeroom teachers for supporting the students and Performing Arts teachers to help prepare for the concert.

This is the first Cumberland Concert that we have had in three years and the first concert that has been co-ordinated by Ms Ebony McCarthy. A huge amount of work, time and effort goes in to co-ordinating a concert involving over 300 students, so a special thank you goes to Ms McCarthy. Thank you also to the parents for encouraging your children and bringing lots of smiles and applause to the performances! We are all so proud of our Cumberland students!!!

Assembly Performances

Congratulations to Thenumi S, Thimath B and Jasmine K for their performances at Assembly. It takes much time, effort, practice and courage to perform in front of an audience. They should feel very proud of their achievements!

Orienteering-Capture the Flag!

What a great way to finish the week for Cumberland students! Thank you to Mrs Dowling for organising a challenging orienteering course for Year 3 to Year 6 students. Excitement was in the air as the sirens rang to commence their challenge to capture the flag!

Year 3 & 4– Score Course

  • Students were paired with someone of the same House and same gender.
  • Students had approximately 60 minutes to find as many controls (small orange and white squares) from their map as they could.
  • A siren sounded at 50 minutes warning students to return to the start and then once again at 60 minutes to sound the finish.
  • If students did not return by the final siren, they did not receive any points for their House.

Year 5 and 6 – Orienteering Course

  • Students selected their own partner, someone from their House and same gender.
  • Pairs started at 2-minute intervals.
  • Pairs ran to all control points in numerical order and completed their course as quickly as possible.
  • Students needed to find the large orange and white material orienteering markers with the clip/stamp marked on their map.

Foodbank Drive

Roman P and Eva J  (Community and Service Captains)

A massive thank you to our Aitken community for supporting and getting involved to donate items to our local community’s foodbank. The foodbank drive was a tremendous success, and the volunteers were overwhelmed with the kindness and generosity shown by our College community to make a difference to those in need. Thank you to Mrs Schulz for allowing us to host this fundraiser and everyone’s contribution, it is greatly appreciated.

Also, a big thank you to Mrs Natalia Presta and family for picking up and delivering the goods to Pastor, Jenny, who runs the foodbank every Wednesday at Real Life Church in Tullamarine.

Happy Holidays!

A very big thank you to students, families and staff for making it through three full terms of school! It has been an inspiration to see all the amazing teaching and learning that has taken place. Every week at the Fairview and Cumberland Assemblies, classes have had the opportunity to show case the excellent learning and the variety of activities that students have been involved in throughout the term. It is an absolute delight to see Fairview and Cumberland students get together during Assemblies and Chapel services to celebrate achievements and feel that special sense of community and connectedness.

I cannot thank our dedicated Primary staff enough for their time, commitment and care throughout the term. We are all very proud of the hard work and positive attitudes demonstrated by the students.

The Primary staff and I wish you all a safe and relaxing holiday break and thank the students for their positivity and hard work. A special thanks also to the families for your ongoing support and trust in us.

May your holidays be filled with cherished family time and give you all a chance to feel refreshed and ready for Term 4!
