National Science Week

On Thursday, 18th August to celebrate National Science Week, the Year 5 and 6 students had the opportunity to participate in a ‘Forensic Science’ Incursion.  The students were divided up into small groups, given several pieces of evidence and presented with a crime to solve.  It was a fantastic experience for all the students, and they thoroughly enjoyed collaborating to work out the ‘who dunnit’. Using fingerprints, footprints, and their deductive skills, they were able to one by one eliminate several suspects and determine the true culprit.

Last week saw students from both Junior and Senior school participate in a number of educational and exciting activities for Science Week. During lunchtime on Wednesday, there was a ‘Forensic Frenzy’ activity, where students completed a number of activities including fingerprint analysis, DNA analysis and blood typing to ascertain who was the kidnapper. That same afternoon the Year 11's had guest speakers come to talk about different career and university options related to Science.

On Thursday, we hosted our first Science Fair. External companies such as ReelAir Imagery, Splinterz Leadlighting, the Peter Mac Institute and the Discovery Centre were present to demonstrate such things as drones, virtual reality sets and creating a marble run. The Discovery Centre gave a live show in the lecture theatre which was centred around light. It was absolutely fantastic to see all of the student work on display and to see what each year level is doing in the classroom. The Naunton Family Building was buzzing with parents and students all brimming with curiosity and enthusiasm, exploring science at Girton.
