Lent

Lent is the time of year when Christians prepare for Easter. The first day of Lent is Ash Wednesday and many Christians mark this day and the start of Lent by going to Mass where a priest will place ashes on their forehead in the shape of a cross.

Children will attend a prayer service on Ash Wednesday at School.

The word Lent comes from an older English word meaning "springtime".

Catholics are called to pray, fast and give during Lent. We have shared some Lenten activities you could do as a family during Lent.

The season of Lent is upon us. Lent is the 40 days before Easter. During Lent we are called to do 3 things, Prayer, Fast and Almsgiving. This allows us to experience Lent as a special time for creating a welcoming space for God. Simple activities like making your bed or helping others become acts of justice and kindness, part of a life of following Jesus and making room for God in our lives.

We invite you as a family to participate in the season of Lent by following our family calendar. Some activities might not suit your family so you could substitute the activities for something else.

You might like to make your own family Lenten calendar or make a paper chain with 40 loops. On each chain write a person or group that you can offer a prayer for. For example; someone who has died, nurses who care for the sick, the poor etc. Every day/night, gather together and take off a loop. As a family, offer a pray for the person, group on the chain.

Place the calendar in a prominent place in your home. For example on the fridge, pin board etc.

We hope you enjoy completing these Lenten activities as a family.
