Communication News: Core Language Boards

Core Language Boards

Throughout the year we will be highlighting different Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems that are used at Monash SDS!

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) includes all forms of communication (other than oral speech) that are used by an individual to express needs, wants, thoughts and ideas. AAC systems can be used to support both receptive and expressive communication and it does not stop or slow down speech development.

At Monash SDS all students have access to core language boards which consists of core words (frequently used words) and fringe words (individualised and specific words). Core words include frequently used words such as more, finish, help, stop, go, etc. Fringe words are specific and individualised for the setting or student (e.g. classroom, bubbles, toys, computer, etc.).

If you are interested in learning more about AAC please contact a speech pathologist to determine the most suitable option for your child!
