Focus on Learning

Sharnie Meade Stage 1 teacher

Year 1/2 have had a fabulous start to the year; lots of learning is already occurring!

Mathematics:

Students have been working hard on 'Whole Number' concepts the last 2 weeks.  We have been practising counting, all the way up to 1000! Following on from this, students have been introduced to the Place Value System of hundreds, tens and ones.  We have been working on counting large groups of items by breaking them into smaller groups of ten, as well as using MAB resources to create 2 and 3 digit numbers in a variety of ways.

At home you can be assisting your child to continue their learning by counting on from numbers, counting large collections of items together, and counting by tens or hundreds.

Below are some photos of our Maths learning.

PDHPE:

Stage 1 has been focusing on our throwing and catching skills.  We have been working hard on accuracy with these skills.  Some mornings, we will play ball games for 10-15 minutes to warm up our bodies for learning, as well as practise our skills.  On a Wednesday afternoon, we have also be working on overarm and underarm throwing and catching.

As part of PDHPE, and also incorporating Creative Arts - Dance, we have been investigating different ways our bodies can move.  We have been learning about low, middle and high movements, as well as the tempo of the music and how to move our bodies to match.  We brainstormed the different ways sea creatures can move, and created short movement sequences based on this, to the count of '1, 2, 3, 4'.   This will culminate in students performing a dance we have been regularly practising in class, as well as choreographing their own dance in small groups...stay tuned for videos and photos of this!
