Specialists - PE

Here we go Miners Rest!  Let’s make 2022 the best!

We are so happy to be back for another year of Physical Education, keeping fit and learning new skills together in our beautiful facilities.

We would like to welcome all of the new families who have made the fantastic decision to include Miners Rest Primary in their educational adventure.

We can guarantee you will all love the program we have planned for this year incorporating units focussing on athletics, minor games, AFL football, basketball, gymnastics, volleyball and many other popular sports!

This term, we will launch into practice for our upcoming Whole School Athletics Carnival, one of the biggest events on the PE calendar.  Katherine is aiming for another successful day incorporating all year levels competing at Llanberris Reserve in late March.

Following our carnival (the very next day) we will continue with the Ball Sports Day tradition where students are placed into their house groups to compete in team games including, spoke relay, tunnel ball and the shuttle (baton) relays.

In amongst all this excitement, we will be holding tennis try-outs for students who are feeling inspired by the Australian Open Competition that just concluded.

Later in the term we will also be running Cross Country trials for students interested in running a 2km or 3km course .

Finally, just to top it all off, YEAR FOUR CAMP at Wyuna, Queenscliff.  We were so lucky to lock in a date for our Grade Four children when (hopefully) the weather will be blissful at the beach.

WOOOOHOOOO!  What a jam packed term we have to look forward to!

We both cannot wait to see you all in class and around the school grounds enjoying our new sporting equipment system.  Each area of the school has been allocated bins of equipment to correspond with that particular ‘zone’.  Students will have access to a range of equipment they can use at both recess and lunch times.  The bins will be taken out by our FABULOUS sports captains at the beginning of recess and collected by them at the end of lunchtime.  We are really hoping that students will take great responsibility when returning the equipment to the allocated bins.  Below is a list of the areas and what equipment is available to use.  If students have any other suggestions for things they might like to use while outside we would love to hear from them with their ideas.

Have a wonderful first few weeks and welcome back!

Physical Education Homework

Whether isolating due to covid or having a spare moment after school or on the weekend, there are many ways we can support the development of our student’s Athletics Carnival skills!

Last week, this week and next week we are focussing on six main elements of the athletics program,

  1.  Shot put (3-6) and Overarm tennis ball throw (F-2)
  2. Discus (3-6), overarm vortex throw (F-2) and sprinting
  3. Long jump (3-6) and hurdles (F-2)

If you are looking for activities to engage your children in at home or on a local oval you could use some basic materials to practice the skills involved in these events.  Students should be able to tell you what they need to do to complete a successful throw, jump or run.  If they have forgotten, below are a few diagrams to help everyone along the way.  The more confident your child is when completing these events, the happier they will feel to contribute at our Athletics Carnival.

Items that you could substitute for shot puts, discuses and vortex are; tennis balls, bocce balls, frisbees (discus), plastic plates (discus) or paper aeroplanes (overarm and forward stepping action).
