Year 9 Advance

Murrindindi Camp

Advance camp – Torquay Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award – qualifying expedition

Year 9 Advance students finished off the school year by participating in their ‘qualifying adventurous journey’ as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award over 3 days, staying at Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park. To meet the requirements of the award students were required to work in their cabin groups to plan, prepare and cook their own meals, this encouraged students to develop independence skills by being responsible for their own meals with their group, where all students must contribute and help out where needed.

On day one students visited You Yangs Regional Park, where they completed a 9km hike from the visitor’s centre, along Big Rock track then up to Flinders Peak, taking in the scenic views, stopping for lunch before hiking back down. We made the trip to the caravan park where students then unpacked into their cabins then prepared their planned dinners before some night time games.

Onto the second day students prepared their own breakfast and packed lunch for the day trip to Lorne along the Great Ocean Road. First stop was at Livewire Park, where students participated in tree top high ropes course, and zip line. Students could complete 5 different courses and zip coaster, before they were able to explore the spring circuit (five zone elevated trampolining net). Students then got on the bus and travelled to hike down to the beautiful Erskine falls. Students then travelled back to campsite to cook dinner & activities at campsite.

The final day included students packing up everything and cleaning their cabins. Student travelled to Geelong Waterfront to stop for an urban hike from Rippleside Park, Geelong to the Geelong Waterfront on Ripple side to Eastern Beach walking trail, toilet break and lunch before making the journey back to RHS.

Overall, all students were successful completing the requirements of the ‘qualifying adventurous journey’, where they developed valuable leadership skills while having fun creating new connections on camp. Great work Advance students!!!
