Independence Centre

Curriculum

Can you believe it is Week 5 already? It has been another successful week of Remote Learning in the Independence Centre. Tuesday was our first Specialist Day and feedback from students has all been positive! They had the opportunity to meet with their specialist teachers in the morning and ask any questions so they could confidently complete tasks. It was amazing to see the creativity in the 1950’s dances, flipbooks and Indonesian habitats students were able to create. Students were also involved in Netball skill sessions each day of P.E. Make sure you check out your child’s Seesaw page to see all their fantastic specialist work.

It has been wonderful to see students using the Zoom chats throughout the day to engage with their peers and teachers. Students have the chance to meet with teachers and other students during the timetabled Literacy, Mathematics, and lunchtimes to ask questions or share how they are going with each task. The 3/4 teachers have been combining classes for our lunchtime Zoom meetings so that students have the opportunity to interact and play games with their peers outside of their grades.

In Maths last week, students learnt about symmetry and the properties of 3D shapes. You may have noticed some items from your household being moved or photographed as students collected groups of symmetrical and asymmetrical things around their homes. They also found 3D objects and categorized them based on their features: face shapes, edges, vertices, and size. It was excellent to see students apply their new learnings about shape by creating some amazing pets out of recycled items at home! The 3/4 teachers have been so impressed with the quality and details students are continuing to put into Maths tasks each day.

For Literacy last week, students completed reading tasks using their inferring skills; taking evidence from the text and their prior knowledge to find hidden meanings. It was great to see students challenge themselves and have a go at reading and making inferences with complex passages. Students also had the opportunity to complete some free choice writing and practice some of the writing strategies they have learnt to create some very engaging texts. Our inquiry investigation into explorers and historical journeys continued as students investigated how travel has changed over time. They discovered the conditions and features of ships and how they were used as the main mode of transport for explorers in the 1700’s and 1800’s.

A new addition to our daily slides has been our Gratitude diary, where students can reflect each day on three things that they are grateful for. It has been really wonderful to see students celebrate some of their wins and keep their positive mindsets.
