Curriculum

Another amazing week of Remote Learning from our 5/6's has been and gone. Students are continually producing amazing work and completing all the tasks to the best of their ability.

Maths

For maths this week students continued exploring data analysis and representation and expanded on their knowledge from the week before. Students began the week by digitising their data tables and graphs by learning how to create them on the Google Sheets App on their iPad. They were fortunate enough to have some student-led teaching occur here where a couple of their peers (thanks Tvisha and Emily G!) recorded some amazing videos for each student to watch and learn. Students then continued to explore data representations such as line graphs, dot plots and stem and leaf plots throughout the rest of the lessons during the week and created their own forms of these data representations using given data. An important part of this process was for students to interpret the data by answering a range of questions.

Reading

Our remote learning reading tasks this week included a Writing Portfolio task where students created a “Boy Overboard Word Web”. This word web was based off the class novel that all classes have recently finished reading called “Boy Overboard”. Students had to create a word web using the characters and settings portrayed in the text and then describe the connections between each of these characters and settings.

Writing

Writing sessions this week saw students continue to explore their persuasive writing skills by practising working on including emotive language. They learnt that the inclusion of emotive words helps to connect to the reader and persuade them. In addition to emotive language, students also continued to build on their knowledge of “Show, Dont Tell” in their persuasive writing. The idea of “Show, dont Tell” is to help students add greater description to their piece, engaging the reader to gain a deeper understanding of the argument being written.

Year 6 Jumpers

As all students in Year 6 would know, the Year 5/6 teachers had great delight in personally delivering each of the Year 6 students their individual 2020 Year 6 Jumpers right to their home. All students were extremely excited and happy to receive their jumpers and will enjoy wearing these throughout the remote learning period as well as at school. A special thank-you to Mrs Naismith for organising the jumpers. They look amazing! A reminder to all students to please name your jumper as you would not to lose it or get it mixed up with other students.

Zoom

Zoom meetings are continuing throughout each day of our remote learning and we are so impressed with the commitment, respect and engagement all students are showing in these zoom meetings. This week we are excited to be trialling Zoom Breakout rooms where students will be put into small groups to participate in some collaborative learning. Teachers will move between these breakout rooms to ensure all students are participating and on task. We can't wait to report back on how it all goes!

Student Voice

  • "I really enjoyed making the different types of graphs this week in maths" - Ollie C 5/6B
  • "I liked how we got to learn about the most common types of graphs that we will use quite often." - Tom M 5/6B
  • "Emotive words are important in expositions because the reader will understand using their feelings." - Mehek G 5/6B

  • If parents have any questions/queries we ask that you message teachers via Sentral

Pupil of the Week

5/6B: Ollie C -

For displaying great kindness in ensuring he could make contact with other students at home to check up on their wellbeing and ensure he maintains the positive connections he has with his class members. Great gesture, Ollie.

5/6C: Roy Y -

For displaying a love of learning when completing all tasks. Well done on always having a go and challenging yourself! You ask questions or reply to feedback to further your understanding. Amazing effort, Roy!

5/6SB: Eddie T -

For completing a detailed word web which showed a good understanding of the class novel 'Boy Overboard' by Morris Gleitzman. You included a range of examples that showed how each character was connected. Well done!

5/6W: Ansel A -

For extending yourself when exploring line graphs, dot plots and stem and leaf plots. You engaged in self-directed learning to create your own handmade data displays which were clear and easy to interpret. Fantastic work, Ansel!
