Senior School

Senior student and teachers 'Surprise Luncheon'

YEAR 12 SURPRISE LUNCHEON

Year 12 can have its stressful moments and the end of Term Three is a particularly challenging time, but there’s nothing like tasty food to boost the spirits. Staff from every corner of the school baked all manner of goodies – and surprised the students with a lovely lunch. It was accompanied by memorabilia displays from their schooling years (thanks so much Mrs Swank) and hilarious video memories. We had a special time together as we shared stories from years past, as early as prep in many cases (and there may have been a few tears shed as well).

Thanks so much to staff far and wide for their yummy contributions, as well as those who helped set up and pack up.

From all your teachers throughout the years and staff in every capacity: We love you all heaps and thank you so much for all you have given to the school over the years. We will miss you so so so much!

SENIORS CARV'N UP THE POWDER

This year the Snow Trip was held in Week 7 at Falls Creek for 24 select students from Year 9 – Year 12. It was an amazing week learning to ski and improving our skills. We skied every day from first lift until the very last. The weather was spectacular with perfect snow conditions. The students were outstanding company for all the staff and it was such a fun break for them from school and the pressure of study.

We are all looking forward to next year!

MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY WORKSHOP

On Tuesday, September 10, Joshua a PhD student from Monash University Parkville came to conduct a workshop for the Year 10 Chemistry class about medicinal chemistry. He ran an engaging class exploring drug formulation, design and delivery. Some of the educational activities included replicating molecular structures of common medicines and a hospital simulation. We also created mock-up drugs out of Lego which we then had to fit into a cell receptor. He explained the differences between studying pharmacy and pharmaceutical science and the jobs which they can lead to and emphasised the constant need for new medicines to be developed. Overall, the workshop was very interactive and gave us great insight into pharmaceutical science and potential career pathways. We would like to thank Mr Fernandes for organising this workshop for us.

CSEN DEBATING TEAM ADVANCE TO FINALS

Last month the St Andrews debating team consisting of seven students, namely Reese Firme, Sarah Farmer, Caitlyn Smith,  Isabelle Smith, Aruvi  Gopesh, Melissa Yao, and emergency Kevin Zhang travelled to Belgrave Heights Christian College to participate in CSEN Debating Competition against a number of other Christian schools.  We are very pleased to report that both our teams won against the competing schools and advanced to the finals. Additionally, Reese Firmer and Melissa Yao were awarded best speakers in their debates.  A great result for the St Andrew's team. Well done, team!

The finals are on the 15th October at Hillcrest Christian College.

TIME FOR PREPS EVEN UNDER PRESSURE

It is so wonderful to see Senior student Michelle Hole make time to read stories and connect with our junior students even when she's under the enormous pressures of studying and preparing for her final exams.

Well done Michelle the preps absolutely loved your visit!

LEARNING ABOUT STAGECRAFT AT MTC

On the 13th of August the Year 9 Stagecraft class went to the Melbourne Theatre Company to look behind the scenes and see how they put on different productions. We were taught how they started to design a show and then went on a tour around the building. First we saw the milliner at work making some amazing hats including an intricate headpiece, then we went to where they made wigs and they explained the process of making a wig. After looking at the wigs we were shown where they made the costumes, where the props were stored and made and the workshop where they made the set. We all learnt so much and have able to apply what we were taught in class.

ST ANDREWS SUSTAINABILITY TEAM AT WORK

Our very enthusiastic members of the Sustainability team a.k.a Enviro team have been thinking of ways to reduce waste and make a difference in the world that God has gifted us. This is what some of our members have decided to do at school during Term 4:

“As part of our sustainability work at school, we will be collecting different recyclable objects such as used pens, bottle caps and bread tags. The bread tags collection will be held for Junior school and Middle school. The collection will begin at the start of next term, and each class will be given a small box to collect their bread tags in. We hope to see people bringing in many bread tags to help the organisation “Bread Tags for Wheelchairs” which has been running in South Africa since 2006. It collects bread tags which a plastics company, Zibo, buys for a small amount per kilo. The tags (high impact polystyrene, type 6 plastic) are recycled, being made into seedling trays. The proceeds are used to provide wheelchairs for the needy. Thank You”

– Aruvi Gopesh and Hannah Chard

“Used batteries are a risk to human health and the environment if disposed of inappropriately. We are going to collect used Batteries which helps to reduce landfill, reduce the use of finite natural resources in the production of new batteries and definitely removes toxic and hazardous substances from landfill. In term 4, each class will be given a container with a lid. When students bring used batteries from home, it is important that they place them in a plastic bag or a container with a lid. We will visit your class every 2 weeks to collect these batteries and pass them on to Mr Fernandes for proper disposal.”

– Caleb Nah, Ruby Muggeridge and Ashley Cheng

Maya Nallathamby and Louis Sunwill be collecting used pens, markers and highlighters which will then to dispose to the appropriate collection points.

Tiffany Kim and Jonathan Chenwill be collecting plastic bottle caps which will be passed on to the Victorian charity ‘Envision’ that uses 3D printing software to turn plastic bottle lids into mobility aids. Thanks to Mrs Hughes for introducing this idea to our college.

So, we encourage our entire college community to participate in this program by encouraging your students at home in collecting recyclable items and bringing them safely to school. If you have any suggestions / questions / ideas, please contact me via the school office.

God bless you all.
