A Day in the Life of a Teacher

Walking into school on your first day of work was a completely different feeling to being on the opposite side. The rooms look different from the educator’s perspective and the treatment from your peers who look up to you was an experience like no other. Undoubtedly, seeing your teachers dressed in clothes that you would were on a day to day basis is very amusing to all students.

Teaching one of my favourite subjects to aspiring students who show respect for the magnitude of knowledge that they receive from their teachers made me appreciate the role that our teachers play in forming the future generation of workers to fill their roles. Ms Maniatis – the teacher with whom I swapped for the day – was a brilliant role model who showed me the pros and cons of her profession.

My day consisted of a multitude of tasks including teaching several classes, photocopying papers, correcting tests and following my mentor around to various jobs. As a teacher you see the amount of work put in behind the scenes to prepare for a class. The long hours spent writing notes for lessons, creating course requirement sheets and addressing any concerns from students, parents and your co-workers show that work hours are extended beyond school times and into personal time that is rarely appreciated.

I am very grateful for an opportunity to participate in this wonderful experience.

The Teacher/Student Swap Day our school had on the 30th of April was not short of a fantastic experience for all members involved. I was fortunate enough to swap with Mrs Fisher and take over her classes for the day. After a weekend of preparing for the classes, creating powerpoints, kahoots and even a pop quiz I truly realised what hard work our teachers put into lessons – but the ‘teacher experience’ did not stop there.

I was able to teach year 8’s and 9’s (including my own class), science. Atoms and elements galore!

I was also fortunate enough to help with a Year 7 textile class, the students of which were incredibly kind and listened to everything that was said.

Throughout the day I was able to work on teaching methods and ways of getting across to students.

Whilst it was fun to tell students to be quiet and give deadly glares to those who weren’t, as well as enjoy a morning tea in the teacher’s lounge and walk around school in some pretty funky clothing, it was a true learning experience. Our teachers at Chelt Sec truly do put in a great lot of effort and it should not go unrecognised. I am so thankful to Mr Redman, Chelt’s SRC and of course all the teachers who helped create the day, I’m without a doubt looking forward to the next one.
