Class Clowns 2019

Congratulations to Billie Hoban who competed in the Class Clowns National Final. Billie’s comedy journey began in the Year 9 Comedy Unit in WOI (World of Ideas). In Year 10, Billie was encouraged to enter the routine in the Victorian Class Clowns Heat. Billie was successful, winning their heat and a spot in the Victorian final. Billie received a wildcard in the Victorian Final which gave them a spot in the Class Clowns National Final, a fixture in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Billie performed fantastically to a packed crowd at the Forum, including a loud and supportive Year 9 MGC cohort. Well done Billie, we are very proud of your achievements and best of luck to the aspiring Year 9 comedians this year!

Comedy Festival

On the 29th of March, it was the day all year 9’s had been looking forward to, the Class Clowns Finale! We were all aware that we would have to develop our own comedy routines during Term 2, so we were eager to see how the contestants would perform. Everyone was filled with immense excitement as we arrived at the Forum Theatre, especially because we knew that a Year 10 MGC student would be performing! We showed our school pride by cheering the loudest across the entire venue. Each performance was diverse and hilarious, there was always something new to watch. We all started wondering how we could construct our own routines. Should we do stand-up? A song? A skit? Watching others perform started to shed light on how many ways comedy could be presented. After all the acts had concluded the winners were announced, we all agreed that it was an extremely hard task to judge such outstanding performances and we recounted to our friends what made them all so unique and entertaining.

I know that many students are nervous about the upcoming comedy unit, but what this excursion showed us is that, with confidence and a bit of risk-taking, we can step out of our comfort-zones and get a lot out of the experience.
