Sporting Sucess!

Asha Newstead competed in the U15 State Hockey Team over the school holidays and won the Nationals.  This is a fantastic achievement as Victoria has only won this one other time in the last 20 years.

Jade Frame was the Goal Keeper in the Development State Team. They finished 8th overall. It is also a great achievement to make this team and her first State Team.

Share your achievements

If you would like to share your daughter’s sporting achievements with the school community, I invite you to send in whatever information or photos you have to my email.

While I will always aim to acknowledge the achievements of our students in the Interschool Sport program, I am aware that a lot of our students are very talented in these sports at a State or National level outside of school or at a wider range of sports such as Fencing, Gymnastics or Diving.

State Swimming

What a way to finish off the Inter-school swimming season for 2019!

Last Wednesday a record 20 students competed in 24 events at the SSV State Swimming Championships held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

The 2018 season seemed like it could not be beaten, with a total of 13 medals won and a top 10 finish overall. As you can see in the results below, the athletes in this year’s Swimming team left the team of 2018 in their wake (pun definitely intended).

Not only did the team of 2019 win 17 medals, we finished 2nd in the aggregate points award. This achievement is incredible for 2 reasons: firstly, it includes points won in both female AND male events throughout the whole carnival and secondly, the winning school was Maribyrnong Sports Academy which no school has a chance of competing against.

Some specific highlights of the day:

  • Dominique Quirk (Yr12) finished her 6th year as part of the MGC Swimming Team. Dominique was a perfect role model for the younger students not only this year as the only Year 12 in the team, but over her 6 year ‘career’. Ever positive and encouraging of her teammates and opponents, Dom has been rewarded in her last 2 years picking up 4 out her 5 State Medals over those 2 years.
  • The 15-16yr Medley Relay and 16yr Freestyle Relay won a gold medal again. The group of 5 swimmers have now won gold in these relays since Yr7, making it 8 gold medals from 8 attempts.
  • Natasha Lowe (Yr9) arrived at MGC this year and played a big role in our team’s success. Winning a number of individual medals, she also strengthened our relay teams, helping them to a bronze medal and a 4th place.
  • The SSV Record set by our 16yr old Freestyle Relay team. The group of 4 swimmers add this record to their 12-13yr Freestyle Record set (and still holding) in 2016.
  • Kala Byrne (Yr8), Chloe Mitchell (Yr8) and Chloe Johnstone (Yr7) swimming in an age group 4 and 5 years above them and finishing a respectable 6th in the 18-20yrs Freestyle relay.
  • A total of 8 students winning their first ever SSV State Swimming medal

Given we do not have a swimming pool at our school, and do not run any form of swimming practice/training at all, credit must go to the athletes for their hard work and dedication to their own performances throughout the season.

Bring on 2020!!
