Kindy Start

It as so nice to be able to have the Kindy Start children at school on Friday for their first onsite Kindy Start session.

They were all so grown up and settled. We had a lovely time.

We explored the Kindergarten classroom and learnt about some of the 'big' school routines. We read a book about a peculiar princess and an equally funny dragon who swapped places. Then we made prince and princess crowns.

This week we will be searching for 'very hungry caterpillars' in the garden and taking a tour of the school in preparation for our full days of Kindy Start on Friday 13 November and Friday 20 November 2020. The children will meet their 2021 Year 6  buddies and participate in all the experiences of a day at school.

Rainbow Room

The Rainbow Roomers have had a busy start to the term, and are lucky to have welcomed Sara Cross into our room each morning. Our learning focus this term is on transport, machines and road safety – our group knows quite a bit about big machines already, so we are building on this knowledge and finding out new things, too. We have been reading lots of books about everything from diggers, to road trains to pirate ships, and writing about these. Our designing and building skills have been tested as we have built pirate ships, helicopters and paper planes, and are working towards designing our own machines.

We have also been learning about road safety, by recognising and understanding road and traffic signs in our community. Last week we went for a walk, following Oliver's mud-map, down Pudman Street and along Market Street so we could practise safely crossing the road at the pedestrian crossing. Our return trip was via the park, with the highlight being a quick squiz at the new skate-park. We all enjoyed being out and about in the community and spotting all the road signs we had been learning about in down-town Boorowa.

2/3 Class

Year 2/3 have had a busy start to the term. In literacy, we have finished a unit of work on 'The Lorax' and started a new unit of work focusing on researching and writing information texts. In mathematics, we have been working on addition and subtraction skills, which will help us to complete our next mathematical investigation.

We have been studying Australia, where we are in the world and talking about special places we would like to visit on our continent. We have been talking about being kind to each other and using kind words to make other people feel happy.

We even had an extra gardening lesson with Mr Beadman during which we planted some magic beans down near the play equipment. We can't wait to watch them grow. Term 4 is always so exciting for Year 2/3 students.

Primary

We have had some fantastic learning occurring across the Primary classrooms over the past fortnight. Unfortunately, our first incursion for the year from Questacon had to be cancelled - what a shame! However, we have made some arrangements for another video-based session to be held later in Term 4. We have NRL Gala Days coming up for some children across Years 3-6, and we may be able to sneak in a gymnastics day with Mrs Harpley soon too!

We must remember some basic safety rules when coming to and from school each day. Some students ride bikes or scooters to school, and while that is fantastic, we must remember that it's always safety first:

  • Always wear helmets
  • Watch out for pedestrians and any traffic at all times
  • Cross at safe spots on the road
  • Never listen to music or have phone calls when riding.

Remember that even before or after school you are still representing our school, and your behaviour and respect must be at the highest levels.

We will be reinforcing these road safety rules during school times also.

Year 3/4/5

English

In English, we have started looking at informative texts. We have learned the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts and are building up our knowledge and skills to be able to create non-fiction pieces of writing. In our reading sessions, we have been on the search for plurals and have enjoyed integrating drama into our reading shares to share the plurals we have found.

Science

In Science, we are still learning about the Earth's changing surface. We used paper to learn about how mountain ranges form. We pushed the edges of the paper together, which made the middle of the paper rise and crumple. We then put them together to create a mountain range in the classroom (pictured).

Mathematics - We have almost completed our lessons on measurement and are just about ready to apply our new knowledge to our 'Sprouting Surprises' investigations! This week we will be planting our seeds and growing them in different conditions to see which works best.

Year 5/6

English

In English, we are having an intense reading and writing focus on Matilda by Roald Dahl. We have been writing character descriptions, chapter reviews, personal reflections, predictions and imaginative writing all based on this book. Roald Dahl was a genius!

Mathematics

We have finished a unit of co-ordinates and mapping, and have now moved onto 2D and 3D space - specifically on perimeter, area and volume of simple and complex shapes. We must remember formulas!

Science

We have begun 'Project Chicken Coop' in STEM where we create usable chicken coop designs. We will continue our 'Outer Space' exploration throughout this term too.

Physical Education

We are focusing on touch footy and league tag - this will help us with the upcoming gala days.

Phew - what a big few weeks!

A reminder that:

  • Year 6 formal assembly is on Monday 14 December 2020 at 2:00 pm. Parents of Year 6 students only can attend.
  • Year 6 formal evening is on Tuesday 15 December 2020. Year 5 and 6 students only are invited to attend.

As always, our doors are open if you would like to discuss anything!
