Leadership Conference

Arts Council

On Tuesday 27 October, the Arts Council leaders participated in the annual Leadership Conference, collaborating, sharing ideas and further developing their leadership skills. The Prefects carefully curated team-building sessions, focusing on topics such as effective communication, social issues and event planning, which remain relevant beyond leadership at Killara High School. These engaging activities sparked positive and memorable interactions between students across all year groups.

One of the most memorable activities involved placing the students in a hypothetical bullying scenario. Year seven and eight students were advantaged in certain ways, receiving praise, leniency with game rules and plenty of lollies. Meanwhile, the Year nine and ten students were disadvantaged in these activities and were given carrots instead. With the Prefects as the ‘bullies’ and the Stage 5 students as the ‘victims’, this activity highlighted the importance in taking a stand on social issues while being presented in a highly engaging manner, making it an unforgettable session.

Throughout the duration of period 4, Arts Council leaders engaged in preparations for the fast-approaching Talent Show and Musical, practising and applying the skills they learnt throughout the day. This allowed students to skilfully plan events, brainstorm ideas, and discuss creative proposals. Moreover, the positive attitudes these students attributed to the day, and their willingness to broaden their knowledge, established a memorable experience. This conference created and reinforced interactions between leaders, inspiring and coaching the Arts Council’s talented students.

Sports Council

On Tuesday the Sports Council members had the privilege of attending a leadership workshop run by the Sports Council Prefects and members of the Prefect body. The workshop was extremely successful and productive, as students improved their communication and teamwork skills by participating in a number of team building activities. We discussed a number of issues present at our school including social exclusion, bullying, participation in sporting events and bringing back school pride/house points.

Our Sports Council members practiced many valuable skills such as event planning, writing out event proposals and conducting risk assessments. As the session came to a close, the Sports Council spent an hour brainstorming upcoming year group events and we’re proud to say that we have some great events in the works to look out for this term. We’d like to say a massive thank you to the Prefects that helped out with the sports council, and all the prefects for creating such great events and activities. Overall, an extremely enjoyable day full of smiles and we are so lucky to have such amazing student leaders in the sports council for 2020/21.

Social Justice Committee

Last Tuesday, students in the SJC partook in the annual Leadership Conference. Students were given the opportunity to actively engage within the council, bringing forth social issues and sparking productive and insightful conversations. A welcoming environment was created in A12 in which students developed their skills to effectively perform their duties as leaders of the school.

Strong bonds were created through a range of engaging and informative activities, in which students displayed resilience. Discrimination was roleplayed in one session, where students that wore jeans were at a disadvantage, illuminating just a glimpse of what many people around the world have to go through daily. True leaders revealed themselves during these sessions, showing initiative and actively inspiring others to speak up. Students were able to learn and grow from each other, developing their leadership skills and solidifying their place in the SJC.

Over chips and pizza, these bonds were deepened as students contributed to open, positive conversation. Social issues were brought up and discussed, as the leaders mapped out what should be focused on in the next term of office. Everyone presented issues that they were passionate about and were informed about other problems.

Through each student's willingness to change the world for the better, an open, safe, and socially active environment was created in the SJC, which will hopefully allow more amazing ideas to flourish.

Student Representative Council

Last Tuesday all Killara High School councils attended a leadership conference in which we were able to build important teamwork and communication skills in order to enhance our council’s abilities. The Student Representative Council established our primary objectives and developed plans for our initiatives to be running throughout next year. We have listened to the student feedback and concerns and have decided to focus on improving school facilities such as the bathrooms as well as the importance of school spirit, wellbeing and support networks throughout the school community. We also plan to host events such as holiday celebrations and mufti days throughout the year to assist disadvantaged individuals and raise awareness for important causes. In addition, our council members were able to enhance their skills, such as planning and facilitating effective meetings and ways to communicate productively through engaging activities and teamwork games.

Prefects

At the end of Term 3 the Prefect body collaborated in the creation of many engaging and entertaining activities in order to prepare and build the skills of our 2020-2021 councils. Last Tuesday, the Prefect body were grouped and assigned a council to assist in the preparation and organisation of each skill building activity.

For lunch, the Prefects pulled through with Dominos for all the councils, which was definitely a highlight.  After a much-deserved feast, the Prefect body came together for period 4 to share innovative ideas and to set achievable goals in order to establish what work needs to be done to make the following year as inclusive and fun as possible for the student body. The social media moguls joined forces to initiate creative tactics to further our online presence and plan exciting events that will be accessible to all on our Instagram page. Meanwhile our Year 12 Movie Night organisers went on a mission to jubilee and measured the entire area using only a measuring tape - props to them!

Overall the leadership day was an effective and fun event that further aided the Prefect body to understand what it means to be a leader of Killara High and how to combat the hurdles put in place by COVID-19 restrictions.
